Wood butcher, I like it. I think I'm about on the same level.

I'm Ed and I'm likewise here to refine my skills.

I also like tools being in good nick. I've been fighting a somewhat uphill keeping the existing hackspace chisels in some degree of working order.

Hi all,

I'm Tim and am a total beginner at proper (i.e. skilled) woodwork, although I've been nailing wire to planks of wood for a while to make many of these in various sizes:

I've loved doing this and so now have plans for more sophisticated things, like casings for MP3 players and electronic instruments as well as more interesting acoustic instruments and so need to improve my craftsmanship somewhat ;)

Looking forward to meeting you all, although at the moment I can't make this Wednesday. Hopefully the week after though ...

Cheers,

Tim

I'm a bit of a robotics nut and working on the 2 bots at the space, the larger one will hopefully soon be usable for CNC and sculpting lighter materials including wood.

Hi all,

I have just become a Hackspace member and plan to come to PL(A)YWOOD on the 19th to see what it's all about!

I haven't done much woodwork at all but plan to start making small, rustic picture frames as my first project. I'd be very grateful if someone is able to show me how to use the electronic saws and the sander. I have a scroll saw at home which is pretty straight forward to use, so I am hoping your saws are similarly simple!

I shall invest in an eye protection mask...is there anything else I need to bring?

Cheers,

Katie

Hi Katie;

Welcome to the group.  I won't be there on the 19th, but I'm sure there will be some other members around to give you an introduction to the hand-tools locker and the space in general.

At present, the chop saw is out of action, the table saw is a bit dangerous as the platform is a bit wobbly and the bandsaw is not 'plumbed in', but we're getting there!  The sander is working well though.

If you're making picture frames (and not industrial quantities), a handsaw would be fine - you'll just have to make sure you cut accurately, which is easier said than done!

It is always a good idea to get safety gear - there are some goggles and ear defenders in the space.  It would be a good idea to get a decent dust mask as the extraction system isn't particularly effective at the moment.

Do you know if there's a Mitre Box kicking about or will I need to bring one? Is so, I can donate it for anyone else who wants to use it.

Good call, I'll get me a dust mask too :)

There must be a mitre box hanging around somewhere, but no, I haven't seen one.  You could put it in the locker with a 'PL(A)YWOOD' sticker if you want to keep it safe - it would be a useful addition to our tool rack!

The other tools have been mentioned except the sander. It's a bit of a polisher at the moment and in need of a new belt, but otherwise works fine. It needs some introduction to get the best out of it though due to some idiosyncrasies. I'll be there this Wednesday, so come and find me if you want an intro to it.

I managed to drop in a couple of weeks ago, but my available time is a
little all over the place right now.

I'd like to improve my woodworking skills and pick peoples brains. I'd
like to build myself a desk, as I have a large quantity of salvaged
mahogany. Currently it's at the concept-sketches stage and I'd like to
work out the best way to make/assemble it using the materials I have.

I also inherited a lot of tools and woodworking magazines from my
grandfather a few years ago, and would like to put them to use.

I may be able to get to this Wednesdays meeting, but it will depend on
some other tasks.

Lovely that you found us and joined us!

Yes there is an induction on Wednesday, Janina will be running it this week. We generally meet at 7pm, inductions start at 7.15pm, please make sure you are on time, otherwise you might have to wait until next week.

Just a note on inductions: We just run through the tools and give an overview of Playwood. We will give you access to the tools so that you can come in and use them whenever you want. We do not teach as such, so we don't run workshops (yet). Of course we will try and help anyone who has a question, but we might not have the time or the knowledge to anser your questions – just to avoid any disappointments.

Im an IT consultant day time and wanted to get into a hobby more "real" hence the choice of woodwork. It ticks all the boxes:creativity, patience, satisfaction to build sth from scratch which is tailor made.

Hi Ariel,

Looking froward to meet you this evening.

Just so you know: As a group, Playwood is only looking after the hand tools in the Playwood lockers. Currently we don't have the capacity to run inductions for the table saw, router table and other power tools in addition to the hand tool inductions. However, there are a few Hackspace members who can give you an induction for those tools, so it is peobably best to get in toiuch via the general mailing list.

Hi All,

I've just set up my standing order to the hackspace - looking forward to coming down today or tomorrow to meet people. I've got a general DIY interest, and fancy creating a few items to avoid buying stuff from IKEA :)

By day I'm a project manager at a health charity.

Looking forward to meeting all of you,

Hello,

it is difficult to know what exactly is going on with your payment/access. Best thing to do is to come to an Open Evening (every Tuesday as far as I know) and ask for help to get your card registered.

Thanks,

It is best to contact the London Hackspace through their website - or check out the FAQ.  A common problem is not using your ID number as the reference for the bank transfer.

Hi,
If the payment happened correctly you should have got a confirmation email saying so.
If not, you need to email membe...@london.hackspace.org.uk giving your membership ID (which is the required reference for the payment), the date of the payment, and the amount, and we will look into it.
Regards
Paddy

If anyone can help with that please reply on a postcard ta.

Hello everyone,

I'm Tom, I've just returned to London after a period of absence. I'm looking forward to getting stuck into making stuff out of wood.

Is there an induction session on tomorrow? I have paid my dues, it went through on Saturday but it hasn't change on the hackspace site yet.

I was also wondering how people get stuff in and out of hackspace, given that in London I imagine most people don't have cars. Is there a nearby place to buy wood from?

Hi Tom;

Welcome!  Yep, there is an induction this evening, as all being well, I'll be there from 7pm.  Induction at 7.15pm in the basement workshop.

Regarding wood, I've purchased i) from eBay (treettimber), ii) a large wholesaler who delivered to my uni.  It really depends what type of wood you want.

I have an induction planned for today at the same time, so I don't think I will be on time for today's PL(A)YWOOD meeting. Will have a look when I finish just in case.

Regarding wood, I only bought small pieces so far. Whitten timber has several hardwoods and lots of smaller hardwood remains that are sold quite cheap (you can even try to haggle a bit)  http://www.whittentimber.co.uk/
But if you buy something big that you cannot fit in the tube you probably need to ask for delivery (and permission to store it). I didn't have to do that yet.
I don't know of any wood yards close to HS, but I am sure there have to be some...

Cheers,
Antonio

Hi everyone,

I've been playing with bits of wood for a little while now and found out about the backspace and this group recently.

As space is very limited in central London, I only have a tiny workspace at home with hand-tools only. Any kind of machinery would be too noisy/dusty/big :(

Looking forward to sharing what little I know and learning from others.

With kind regards,
Frank

p.s. It would be nice if we could get the planer/thicknesser working again somehow. I don't mind resawing timber by hand but getting it flat and of consistent thickness is hard work and I'd rather focus on the joinery =)

Hi Spence;

Welcome to the group.  Once you've done your PL(A)YWOOD induction, you can use the PL(A)YWOOD hand tools 24/7.  If you have your own tools, you can come and use the facilities at the London Hackspace without doing an induction.  Otherwise, the group meets every Wednesday evening from 7pm, so that's your best bet if you'd like to get some tips and tricks from other members.

I went down tonight but the girl I spoke to - sorry I've forgotten her name - said that PL(A)YWOOD didn't give training on the planer or other power tools and that I would need to speak to someone else on this. Another person mentioned Mathew Gill?

Do you know who I should speak to so that I can get some training on the planer?

Many thanks

Hi I'm Tim.  I commute in from Essex so can rarely make the space since it moved to new quarters.

I've built a few things out of wood, mostly using a Kreg pocketscrew jig (like my Son's overcrib changing mat & an 8ft scale model of Thomas the Tank Engine).  As I like to make big random things, the space often isn't the best place to conduct them, but I'm missing many key skills I'd like to learn, so hope to come by and pick peoples brains.

Recently got a wood lathe with bowl turner for no reason other than it looked fun.  I'd really like to make some wooden bowl but lack any sort of lathe training, so if anyone is about who can give me some pointers so I don't lose any digits it'd be appreciated.
