I posted these comparisons from 2006 to 2008 to illustrate changes in top
speeds as measured through the speed traps.

The first table compares the 2008 team/driver combination with the equivalent 2009
team/driver - the same driver if possible, otherwise the 2008 driver is compared to
his 2009 replacement. This comparison is intended as a team comparison, but the first
(driver) table is also of some interest - but should be read with care.

Notes

Honda have been renamed Brawn-Mercedes and Force India have switched from
Ferrari to Mercedes engines.

Q: How does the best lap of the whole weekend (3 practice sessions, 3 qualifying
periods and the race) compare to the best lap of the weekend in 2008?

Here are two tables - one compares driver with driver; easy enough if the same
driver remains in the same team. If not we compare the 2008 driver with the guy
who replaced him.

Note: Honda has morphed into Brawn-Mercedes, while Force India have switched
from Ferrari to Mercedes power.

'S' is the session when the best lap was achieved (P1/P2/P3/Q1/Q2/Q3/R)
'Lps' are the total laps in all sessions
'Diff' is the gain/loss in seconds
'%Diff' is the difference in time as a percentage of the 2008 time

Negative Diff/%Diff mean that the driver/team improved. Positive means they
got worse.

There can be several reasons for the variations seen.

Apologies if the tables wrap - save it and reformat if you are interested.

=====
Every driver apart from Heikki Kovalainen achieved a better lap time than in 2008.

The second table takes the best lap time from both drivers in each team and compares
with the equivalent team last season. Probably a better comparison.

The revised rules on engine usage mean that there is no simple
comparison between teams - at least not at this stage of the
season. I'll include a rather long summary of engine usage so
far.

ES# - Engine Serial # - for each driver
EV# - Event number - number of events that engine has been used

Events listed as 1/2, 2/3, etc. indicate that an engine change was made
during the event - the first engine was used for the two Friday practice
sessions with a new unit installed for Saturday/Sunday.

FIA documents at:

Gearboxes
=========

The same 4-event rule still applies, drivers must use the same gearbox for
four consecutive events. Any forced gearbox changes will result in a 5-place
grid penalty at that event. Drivers who fail to finish a race are able to
change gearboxes at the next event without penalty.

01 AUS 1 Hamilton - new 'box (post-Qual), 5-place penalty

02 MAL 4 Rikknen - DNF (AUS), free change
02 MAL 15 Vettel - DNF (AUS), free change
02 MAL 23 Barrichello - new 'box (pre-Qual), 5-place penalty

03 CHN 10 Glock - new 'box (pre-Qual), 5-place penalty
03 CHN 23 Barrichello - free change because he used a spare 'box (MAL)

04 BRN 9 Trulli - DNF (CHN), free change
04 BRN 17 Nakajima - DNF (CHN), free change
04 BRN 10 Glock - free change because he used a spare 'box (CHN)

05 ESP 17 Nakajima - DNF (BRN), free change

Fourteen drivers completed a four-race sequence in Bahrain and began a
new sequence in Spain - Hamilton, Kovalainen, Massa, Kubica, Heidfeld,
Alonso, Piquet, Bourdais, Buemi, Webber, Rosberg, Sutil, Fisichella &
Button. Nakajima had a free change after failing to finish in Bahrain.
Five drivers - Rikknen, Trulli, Glock, Vettel & Barrichello are still
in mid-sequence because they had changes at earlier events.

Barrichello (MAL) and Glock (CHN) had enforced changes and had to use a
spare gearbox, incurring a 5-place grid penalty. Both drivers were allowed
a new 'box at the following event, starting a new 4-race sequence. The
Technical Reports state, "The above driver had to replace his previous
gearbox during the last event for a spare gearbox and this was before the
four consecutive events expired. Therefore he may use a new gearbox at
this event and the four consecutive events will start here in accordance
with Article 28.6a of the 2009 Formula One Sporting Regulations."

The Technical Report (MAL) didn't mention that Hamilton had a new 'box at
Sepang. This may be an omission by Jo Bauer, or that McLaren chose not to
make a change. Hamilton had a new gearbox for the Spanish GP, confirming
that McLaren did not change his 'box in Malaysia.

Introduction for New Readers
============================

2009 is the 12th season that I have posted these amateur overtaking analyses. My intention
was to allow easier comparisons between Grands Prix, seasons, circuits, drivers, etc.

In order to make any meaningful and/or useful observations it is essential to produce the
stats in as consistent a way as possible. To do this I have devised several "rules" that
I try to follow for each event. Please note before posting to complain that I missed an
obvious passing manoeuvre that it has probably been excluded because of one of my "rules".
The rules are outlined in the "Disclaimer" below - please read it.

This analysis was mainly derived from the official FIA lap chart, which is usually
available from www.fia.com, http://forix.autosport.com or www.autosport.com/f1/ on race
day or the following day. The original charts remain copyright of the FIA.

Other excellent Formula One websites are available. This analysis is completely and
totally
unofficial.

Disclaimer
==========

For the purposes of this analysis, I only count what I will term "genuine" passing
manoeuvres, which means that I always exclude:

a) any place changes made during pit stops
b) all lapping or unlapping manoeuvres
c) any place changes made during the first lap

Hopefully, a) & b) are obvious. c) is because although lap one is often the best
opportunity to make up places, it is also not typical of the rest of the race, and so,
for the purpose of comparing races with other races and seasons with other seasons,
it is simpler to exclude lap one completely. I do summarise the changes on lap one
later in the post.

For the purposes of this analysis a "pit stop" encompasses the slowing down lap and the
out lap, since any passes during those laps MIGHT be due to the driver slowing down or
speeding up.

Passes are not counted in these stats UNLESS the gained position is held until the
start/finish line is next crossed and so gets recorded onto the lap chart. I try to
ignore anything that isn't recorded in the lap chart, even if it was seen on TV.

These are the passes I read for the 2009 Spanish GP:

Lap Place Passer (Passed) KERS
==========================================
6 11 Kubica (Kovalainen) -/K
7 12 Hamilton (Piquet) K/K
63 4 Vettel (Massa) -/K [1]
66 5 Alonso (Massa) -/K [1]

That's 4 passes in total, compared to 3 in 2008. However, only the Hamilton
pass was really genuine. Kovalainen retired a lap after being passed by
Kubica and Massa was fuel saving when Vettel & Alonso passed him. With so
few passes I'm leaving all three in the stats, partly because the lap chart
doesn't indicate what we know from TV coverage.

The Last 10 Seasons
===================

To save space I have removed the columns for 1997-98 from this table. I have included the
data from those seasons in the Total & Avg. columns. The number of passes for each GP in
1997-98 is summarised after the main table.

Note: The number in brackets (ASP) is the average starting position in 2009 (grid
position after any penalties have been applied).

Obviously, a driver who often starts from pole position has very little chance
to gain places while one who usually starts at the back of the grid has a good
chance of gaining places.
