Notes: During the first 30m only the two Toro Rosso drivers set any times. New boy, Jaimie
Alguersuari, did his first ever laps in an F1 car, and though starting off slowly, managed
to shave 10s off his best lap time by the end of the 90m. At just 19 years of age he could
become the youngest F1 starter on Sunday, but Sebastian Vettel took part in an F1 practice
session at a younger age.
Conditions were much warmer than at the last two GPs, but the strong wind made things a
bit
difficult at times.

Notes: Mark Webber's session finished early due to a hydraulic problem. Jarno Trulli had

his Toyota after an electrical problem. It was returned to the pits and repaired in time

to get some more laps. Felipe Massa had several off-track excursions and could only manage

Timo Glock suffered a hydraulic leak during his first flying lap, but was able to return
to
the pits and rejoined the session after repairs. Adrian Sutil's session was ended by an
off-
track excursion into the barriers at Turn 8.

Jaimie Alguersuari's Q1 session ended with a failure in the throttle system. In Q2, Rubens
Barrichello experienced a rear-end problem which slowed him down and shortened his
session.
It was found that his Brawn lost it's damper spring. Later replays showed the errant
spring
flying off his car. Rubens was running a short distance (about 4s?) ahead of Felipe
Massa's
Ferrari, and the spring was seen to hit Felipe's helmet, causing him to crash heavily.
The Q2 session was almost over at that point. There was a 30m delay while Massa was
extracted
and stabilised, he was conscious, but was sedated before being flown to hospital.
Brawn changed the offending spring on Jenson Button's car as a precaution, but this
delayed
his entry into Q3 so that he was only able to run three laps. His fuel was already loaded
and so he was running heavy on his solitary flying lap.
Q3 ended in confusion when the timimg screens failed so that no one was aware of the final
positions.
Massa underwent an operation to deal with a double skull fracture, which meant that he
would
take no further part in the event - and probably for several future events too.
