织(Institute for Global Leadership)举办。
TILIP(Tufts Initiative for Leadership and Global Perspective)项目。

EPIIC (Education for Public Inquiry and International Citizenship)
Dilemmas of Empire and Nation Building;等等。

dership.org/programs/epiic。

Here is a letter introducing EPIIC&Empower
Dear PKUer,

We hereby sincerely recommend a FANTASTIC SYMPOSIUM and PILOT INTERNSHIP proj
ect to all our fellow students at Beida - EPIIC & EMPOWER program. The campus
promotion will be held in the week after National Day vacations.

This EPIIC and EMPOWER program combo is hosted by the Institute for Global Le
adership (IGL) at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. The same institu
te has hosted a much renowned and pretentious program – TILIP, Tufts Initiat
ive for Leadership and Global Perspective – in Beida since 1998. Around 40 B
eida students have gone through the past 10 years’ program with a fresh glob
al view and leadership skills professionally trained in a dynamic internation
al environment, many of whom now have made, and are continuing to make, remar
k able achievements in their professional careers, either in academia or in o
ther sectors.

The EPIIC (Education for Public Inquiry and International Citizenship) progra
m features a prestigious high-profile academic symposium held in Boston, MA,
in February of every year since 1985. Each year, renowned guests from academi
a, industry and government are invited to attend the culminating EPIIC sympos
ium focused on a specific theme. The 5-day symposium is both INSPIRING in kno
wledge and INTERACTIVE in format, with live discussions on spot and multi-fac
ade activities off spot. Past EPIIC themes include: 2009-Global cities; 2008-
Global Poverty and Inequality; 2007- Global Crises: Governance and Interventi
on; 2006 - The Politics of Fear; 2005 - Oil and Water, 2004 - Dilemmas of Emp
ire and Nation Building; etc. In 2010, among other delegates, student delegat
ions from around the world, including but not limited to China, South Korea,
Singapore, Nigeria, Brazil, Peru and India, as well as Tufts students, will g
ather in Boston to participate in the EPIIC symposium on “South Asia: Confli
ct, Culture and Complexity”.

The EMPOWER program is an internship program that empowers the students to al
leviate poverty. Students from China, US, South Korea, Singapore and elsewher
e will meet each other at the EPIIC symposium. They will be provided a projec
t list of various opportunities of internship in proven organizations in pove
rty alleviation, possible projects including AIDS prevention, micro finance,
water safety, etc. The location of internship varies on project, including bu
t not limited to US, China, South Africa, and South America. Beida students w
ill pair up with foreign students and choose their own project to work on in
summer 2010(internship lasts from three month to one year).

The program is open to all and only Beida students, and 5-10 students would b
e endued the full scholarship this year (including the round-trip flights as
well as food and accommodation in Tufts University). Please refer to Additi
onal Information and http://www.tuftsgloballeadership.org/programs/epiicfor m
ore information. We are looking forward to seeing you in our campus promotion
and interviews.

Special thanks to Office of International Affairs in Peking University and PI
SEI for coordinating the event.

Regards,
EPIIC+EMPOWER PKU Recruitment Committee

Additional Information

South Asia,

South Asia is one of the most dauntingly complex regions of the world.
All of the South Asian states–Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepa
l, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and the Maldives–are contending with momentous changes,
internally, regionally and globally. The region is home to three of the worl
d’s ten most populated countries, two of the world’s nine nuclear weapons s
tates, and the world’s most corrupt country for five of the last eight years
. Political instability, economic instability, poverty, natural disasters, an
d religious, ethnic and cultural clashes are abundant. It is at once one of t
he world’s most dangerous and most promising of areas.
Afghanistan, in its eighth year's largest democracy, is also the region’s mo
st stable state currently. Its economy is booming, with a growth rate of abou
t seven percent annually. Bangladesh, which has less than 40 years of indepen
dence, continues to suffer both natural disasters and man-made political cris
es. Nepal is undergoing a significant and democratic political transition fol
lowing a number of years of political turmoil and conflict. Sri Lanka has had
a democratic government since independence. However, while some like the US
see it as a stable democracy, others like the United Kingdom and the World Ba
nk have called it a flawed democracy due to the recently ended war with the L
iberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Bhutan, a constitutional monarchy, faces ong
oing border disputes and an influx of refugees. The Maldives may see its enti
re country disappear with the rising sea level.
The internal challenges each country faces are often compounded by its relati
onship with its neighbors .Kashmir, administered by India with a Muslim major
ity, has been the source of numerous conflicts between India and Pakistan, wh
ich have engaged in three wars since partition in 1948.
The attacks on the Indian embassy in Kabul and in Mumbai are alleged to have
been committed by groups originating in and supported by Pakistan, such as La
sh kare-Taiba. Adding to the tensions is the nuclear capacity of both nations
, with fears of unclear command and communication structures. Non-state actor
s such as al Qaeda and the Taliban also continue to threaten regional stabili
ty.
Other issues affecting the region include: How will all of the states contend
with the pressures of Western-style modernity that is welcomed and deplored,
celebrated and cursed? Will religious extremism and ethnic chauvinism overwh
elm democratic structures? What do the countries see as their interests and r
oles in the global struggle against terrorism?

IGL (Institute for Global Leadership)
IGL is a distinctive, cross-school program at Tufts University, Boston. The m
ission of the IGL is to prepare new generations of critical thinkers for effe
ctive and ethical leadership, ready to act as global citizens in addressing i
nternational and national issues across cultures. The Institute emphasizes ri
gorous academic preparation and experiential learning. Students learn through
intensive engagement in classes, global research, internships, workshops, si
mulations and international symposia - all involving national and internation
al leaders from the public and private sectors.
Among its more than 16 programs are EPIIC, Inquiry, the China Cross-Cultural
Leadership Program, and EXPOSURE, and it offers many opportunities for global
research and internships.
