TWO YEAR FIXED-TERM

The Program on Energy and Sustainable Development (PESD), a program within the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), seeks a Social Science Research Assistant to support research related to energy markets in China. 

Research Responsibilities:
• conduct independent field research based on Program sponsor deliverables and Program research goals
• perform statistical and econometric analysis, stochastic simulation modeling and general data analysis
• prepare research literature reviews and organizing relevant research data
• write research reports, proposals, and policy briefs and take a proactive role of communicating research findings with both internal and external audience
• coordinate research efforts with PESD researchers, collaborators, students and affiliated staff
• represent Program Directors and/or Program at related meetings as needed

Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in quantitative economics, operations research, or other science or engineering discipline and 1-2 years of experience is required. Advance degree is preferred. 

Must have knowledge of the socio-political aspects of the Chinese energy sector (including, but not limited to the electric power, natural gas, coal, and petroleum industries) and energy policy issues.

Must have knowledge of finance, environment, economics, or willingness to learn about these topics.

Must be able to travel independently both in the US and internationally. 

Must have mathematical and statistical modeling skills and willingness to use them in innovative manner. 

Must have the ability to work comfortably and effectively with high-level officials in governments, companies, and within an inter-disciplinary research environment with scholars in law, political science, economics and engineering. 

Excellent written and oral communications 

Knowledge of Chinese language, culture, and business practice is highly desirable.
