For the connect four, can I just write a socket and connect to the
server myself, and if so, do I gain bounteous amounts of nerd points?

Yes, Scott, you can... And yes, I would say that anyone who wrote their own sockets for this contest would indeed receive some major kudos at the event... Plus it lets you brag to everyone about how easy or hard sockets were in your language.
