Any plans to migrate to CKEditor from FCKEditor? Or anyone built a plugin?

Hi,

I wondering if if the stable release of Apostrophe there are any plans
to replace CKEditor with the newer, better FCKEditor? Probably not if
you've already spent so much time building FCKEditor support.

There are a few CKEditor symfony plugins so this might be a nice
project in the future...

No urgent plans to do this. What do you find exciting about CKEditor?

It would be nice if it supported the name and id attributes of the
editor control being different. The lack of support for that creates
interesting hassles when it's wrapped up as a Symfony widget.

Well a few reasons I guess:

* Next generation of FCKEditor
* Better browser support
* Better Accessibility
* Better interface
* More support in the future - you'll notice that if you even try to
get to the official FCKEditor website it directs to ckeditor.com.

Of course, it's not urgent. But it would seem to make sense to
develop for CKEditor going forward, though I imagine you've got
FCKEditor supported to a point where you wouldn't want to throw that
work away.

One thing I'd like to be able to do is to place images using the
pkContextCMSRichText, but I realize that FCKEditor can do that and
support for that feature must have been removed in favor of the
pkMedia plugin. However, it gets pretty messy to place image slots
next to and in between rich text slots in order to make them flow with
the text. I imagine some fancy CSS work could get images to float
with paragraphs nicely, but it's really nice to be able to do that in
the rich text editor itself.

This is something I will be spending some time looking into!

Cheers
Spike

Hi Spike,

We like the way CMS "areas" allow images, video, etc. to be
interleaved with text while still maintaining a really robust media
management system where the layout doesn't get trashed easily and the
system knows what images are where, etc.

I do recognize that this rules out the "floating an image next to a
paragraph" thing somewhat. I suspect that could be dealt with by a
slot type that included an editable (rich?) text field to be displayed
in association with the image. That could then be styled as needed.

We're also discussing support for allowing different configurations of
a single slot to be treated as distinct slots for purposes of
inserting them into an area. Thus you could give an end user a choice
between inserting the "image with text" slot in its "float left,"
"float right" and "subtitle" configurations as specified in the
template. That would take some doing on our part because there are
small schema changes involved but it's a powerful concept.

Spike,

We completely understand where you are coming from. Keep us updated on your thoughts and progress since we are likely to work through some of these issues, as well.

Geoff
