Deal All,

Thanks for the comments by Jacky Foo, Hans Pitot and Dick Grimshaw. I have reviewed my plan as per attachment keeping these comments in view for your further comments. The submission wise clarifications are provided, however, as follows.

(a)        Jacky Foo submitted on 27/07/07, Subject: points to finalize the treatment aspect and Water holding capacity of the cell 2:

            (i)          The stream is dry from Jan to March and from Sept. to November. Yes it acts like a sewer for that period but some water (0.25 cusec) minimum is always flowing which increase manifold during rains. Also there are many indigenous plants already grown there.

(ii)         The water holding capacity for Cell – 1 and Cell - 2 with 4inch free board and 20inches rock bed is 60% of 2550 ft3 and 60% of 5100 ft3respectively keeping 40% void in stone layers in view. This is to be further reviewed before finalization of design with intended retention times in view.

(iii)        Intended retention time 3.5  days with 22 m3 per day inflow in cell-1 and 7 days in cell-2. This is on lesser side but I have to keep such figure to limit the size of CWLs. I am also counting on sunny weather and temperatures upto 42 degree C in summer. Cold weather 0 to15 degree C is far about 2 months.

(iv)        The outflow from cell-1 and cell-2 has to be ultimately same i.e around 15m3 per day as far as inflow into stream is concerned from these cells. I am not very clear about your question and may have to review it again at the time of design. I have not yet started design and these are assumptions only.

(b)        Hans Pitot submitted on 26/07/07, 27/07/07 & 28/07/07, Subject: CWL plants and uses, CWL Design, Design Criteria and sizing cell 2:

(i)         Presently around 50 but likely to increase to 100 persons in 9 houses. Our density for such houses is 6 persons per house for the main portion and 3 for the servant qaurters. These are sort of small villas.

(ii)        I have included your suggestion for ridge and furrow irrigation system in form of 3 rows of vetiver as per attachment.

(iii)       Sorghum crops were just one option but on second thought I am keeping same plant i.e vetiver in both cells.

(iv)       I am not clear if vetiver rows provided at the end are sufficient to deal with heavy rain scenario.

(c)        Dick Grimshaw submitted on 27/07/07. Subject: Alternative grasses and Vetiver Medicinal:

            (i)          I have noted your point regarding Lemon grass and shall review this at the time of setting up nursery. Thanks for giving information on vetiver for medicinal use as well.

Best Regards,
