E-Workshop: treating effluent from septic tank
The need for simple, easy-to-maintain and sustainable small scale wastewater treatment systems is there in many countries (see case below in India). I hope that Liaqat's request for this e-workshop will set the pace for more ideas, case studies and identification of expertise.
This topic welcomes case studies from other locations and countries.

excerpts from Puri Hotel to be sealed for polluting beach

The local hotels, particularly those located in the beach area, came under the scanner of the State Pollution Control Board's (SPCB), which has detected that these hotels were causing pollution on the beach. The SPCB has directed the district administration to seal Puri Hotel for causing pollution. Puri Hotel, situated in a prime location along the beach........
The board's scientists found the hotel was guilty of polluting the beach by releasing untreated wastewater to a drain, which runs on the beach.
Jagannath Bastia, a noted environmentalist, had alleged that most of the beachside hotels were releasing untreated water causing pollution of the beach. The spilling of wastewater on the beach has changed the colour of the golden sand into black. Following his complaint, the SPCB had inspected 35 hotels close to the beach.
The action against Puri Hotel has led to panic among the local hoteliers and become a topic of hot discussion in various circles.
SPCB scientists had conducted a surprise inspection of Puri Hotel and had taken the wastewater sample a number of times. Repeated lab tests of the sample on different occasions found that the hotel releases highly polluted wastewater much beyond the permissible limits.
