Sourcing Vetiver Grass Submitted by Dick Grimshaw on Mon, 16/07/2007 - 14:05.
My advice would be to bring a pickup truck load of south Indian vetiver from a reliable source (MP Singh can help you here) to Islamabad and grow and multiply it in a nursery. If that nursery was to be irrigated with sewage effluent the rate of multiplication would under Islamabad conditions would be at least 100:1
Jacky Foo refers to the problems of using plants from different parts of the world, and that local are better. True to a certain extent, but in the case of vetiver the majority of vetiver cultivars world wide have the same genotype (we have DNA tested them) and all behave in the same way. Why do they have the same genotype? This is due to the fact that 100 years ago the colonial powers and indentured labor carried the vetiver around the tropics for its aromatic oil in its roots. Because most vetivers have the same genotype research results from say Australia or China are just as applicable in Pakistan. Is there a Research Institute in Pakistan that focuses on aromatic oils. If there is, its staff will know all about vetiver grass and its use and location in Pakistan.
Apart from MP Singh I would strongly suggest that you contact Paul Truong in Australia. Paul has been responsible for leading the development of Vetiver grass for phyto remediation purposes and is very willing to share his experience and give his advice. His email address is:
tru...@uqconnect.net
Another person who could advise you on sourcing of vetiver is Dr Umesh Lavania. He directs vetiver research at the Institute of Aromatic Plants in Lucknow. He could I am sure give you information on vetiver sources on the sub-continent including Pakistan. email:

I think adding Vetiver grass with our own hands ill be dangerous , this will propagate as a weed and difficult to control. At this point of time when we are growing vegetables with untreated domestic effluent, best choice may be to try some local plant, and you may like to start with eucalyptus, which has been with us for quite some time now.
