Monday, February 19th will mark the beginning of a shantytown project
at FIU in unity and solidarity with the Umoja Village in Liberty City,
Miami. Initiated by several individuals and groups at FIU in
conjunction with the broader housing fight, students are planning to
erect a shantytown at FIU's University Park Campus to solidarize with
the housing struggle in Miami and raise the level of consciousness at
FIU about housing, gentrification, and poverty. The shantytown will be
a place for students to gather to discuss politics, for classes to
come and participate in discussions with residents from Umoja Village,
and for networking between activists on and off campus in the broad
struggle for low income affordable housing in Miami. There are over
5,000 people in Miami who do not have a home or shelter and the
students at FIU have had enough!
The goals of building a shantytown at FIU include:
1) Gathering the signatures of the FIU community that support Umoja
Village and the housing struggle.
2) Exposing the FIU community to a visual representation of the
housing crisis and homelessness in Miami. Introducing residents of
Umoja Village to FIU students, staff, and faculty to bridge
understanding and solidarity.
3) To garner student support and involvement at Umoja Village,
including volunteers at the Village, a clothing and book drive on
campus for Umoja Village, and a bilateral education campaign between
residents and students on South Florida college campuses.

through Wednesday (Feb. 19-21), by erecting the village Sunday
evening, donating materials, or volunteering your labor please call
