Why does PIT fail to pick up my test class for my production class?

My project yields an overwhelming number of TIMED_OUTs. From some samples, it looks like PIT is not always picking up all relevant test classes for a live class.

What might cause this? How can I analyze this further? For example, is there a possibility to increase log levels to see which test classes PIT considers overall? Might it be related to the project's mixture of JUnit 4 and 5?
