Hey, all.

Just wanted to pass the word about some nice local social-paced riding opportunities. Flock of Cycles is a local non-profit group, focused on improving road safety for all users by promoting responsible cycling practices. They offer rides on most Fridays, usually starting in Oakland at Dippy the Dinosaur by the Carnegie Library.

The rides (with the exception of the once-a-month Midnight Mass, which is reasonably fast-paced and hilly) are very social, oriented towards fun (speakers blaring 80s music), conversation and mingling, and keeping the group together. Cyclists of all abilities are welcome, and the pace and protocol is such that no-one will be left behind. Bikes and riders of all sorts show up for these rides: urban fixie punks, daily commuters, home-made tall bikes, and even an occasional recumbent. Some of the rides terminate in a potluck down by the lake in Schenley Park; there's even talk of a bike-towed BBQ grill this coming year. Other rides are designed to end near eating establishments such as OTB on the South Side.

If you're looking for a workout, these rides are not for you; there have been times when, due to flat tires and whatnot, we've barely maintained a 7-8 mph pace through the streets of the East End. But it's always a good time.

Check out their website for more info...good bunch of folks.

Thanks, Dan. Looking forward to a ride in the spring, if it ever comes…
