Anyone doing the TOSRV ride in early May? I'm thinking of doing the
Half TOSRV, which is 50 miles down, then 50 miles back the next day.

Sadly, no. I've never managed to do TOSRV, or GOBA for that matter, despite the best of intentions.

Dan,
Check out:  http://www.tosrv.org/10/index.htm
This is one of the oldest and best known rides in the country.  The full ride is 100 miles down on Sat., and 100 miles back.  That's too much for this old engine, especially that early in the season.  50 each way is more reasonable.  One issue this time of year, is notoriously poor weather on the ride.

Thanks, Zarky. I might want to do it if I can ride with company. Let me know if you are doing it. My problem is speed. I only go about 11 mph on a fairly flat terrain. Is it a "flat" ride?

I sent in my reservation, but will only go if the weather is decent.  I would probably drive Fri. afternoon, as it is about 3-4 hrs. away, and stay in a hotel--would be willing to share a room.  I believe the terrain is flat to rolling hills, but I've never done it before.  Speed is an issue, as my cruising speed is a good deal higher, and I like to pass roadies.  I would be willing to wait for you at rest stops.  With 3000 riders, you would probably not be cycling alone.

Hey there, I have been reading that chats about this TOSRV ride....I am interested too...count me in.

As soon as the weather breaks here, I plan on meeting up with you guys for some of the monday evening rides and finally "meet" everyone and put names to faces. I live in Hermitage, PA, so making it done isn't a quick trip and so that's why I haven't been to any of the meetings yet, but the rides I will make time in my schedule....

I have this friday off, and I'm thinking of heading up to State College and test riding a few bikes @ RBR...I am ready for "an upgrade" :)   I'm waiting to hear back from the owner to be sure this would be okay before making the drive though. So maybe a new bike for the TOSRV event(!?)

Can anyone chime in on some pros & cons for:
Challenge Seiran and Seiran SL
Bacchetta Strada, and Corsa
I like the Optima Baron, however the gear inches for my liking are not low enough for the riding that I do....anyone ever heard of a triple crank on the Baron?

Hi Dave!

I've ridden a few Bacchettas (Bacchettae? Bacchettum?), as well as a Baron with a triple crank. Briefly, I found that my sight lines from the Baron were not as good as I'd like for solo riding in rolling countryside; for flat terrain, or riding with a group where I could rely on others to be watching as well, I found the Baron to be a blast. Very, very fun bike.

The Strada and Corsa were decent bikes; I'd go with the Strada for the wider tires if you intend to do trails, touring, etc., or the Corsa if you wanna really pound pavement.

I took a brief spin on the Seiran SL; seemed a fine bike, but didn't take it out of the parking lot, so can't really speak to its merits or flaws.

Zarky asked what I am riding now, I am on an ActionBent Roadster. This was my first ever recumbent, bought a slightly used bike on ebay for low $$ to find out whether recumbent riding was for me so to speak. I love it. The roadster has a lot of cons though in my eyes. It doesn't go fast enough and 40 miles into a ride, if there is a long steeper hill to climb, I am walking. The gear inch range on the roadster is 37"-103". I have already maxed out on the large chainring crank combo, 62T/48T. The cassette combo is a 12-26, I could get something more touring here but don't want to invest more into it if I was going to keep the bike, and even if I get a cassette with an 11T, I still won't be going fast enough. The dual 20" wheels have limitations.

So if I have done my homework, I am looking at the Seiran SL, has a nice gear range of 22"-120", will help on the hill climbs and most definately be faster on the flats. Weight difference, huge. My roadster is like 35lbs....hmmm, the Seiran CR SL I am looking at has a carbon boom and carbon seat, weighing in at 25lb with a rear shock!

Thanks Dan for your comments....
I know for sure that RBR doesn't have any Barons in stock to ride, but I may ask about the triple installed??? and take it into consideration....I have always liked the looks of the baron, and it just looks fast.
The Strada and Corsa both look great too, and nicely equipped compared to what I am riding now....part of my problem is I can only have 1 bike that does it all, and cannot afford to have 1 touring bike, and then a racer, etc.

Well Rob called me back, I am on for some test rides on Friday.

Anybody else up for a new bike? I will have room.

Dave,

I'm prejudiced (as it's my go-to bike for pretty much any type of riding), but have you thought about the Lightning P-38? Best climber of the 'bents I've owned and ridden, and serves admirably well as an all-rounder. I often refer to it as the sport-tourer of the recumbent world.

It has a nice wide gear range with a 52-42-30 triple and a mountain 11-32 cassette on a 700c wheel, is very stiff with regards to power transfer, and, assuming you choose the wide fork and 406 front wheel, has plenty of room for fat tires and fenders. It's also the best low-speed handling 'bent I've ridden; with some effort, I can keep it upright at speeds near 2 mph, and it's perfectly controllable at speeds in the 4-5 mph range. It'll weigh in near the Seiran (maybe a pound heavier...I think 26 pounds is stock weight.)

Rob usually has one or two...if naught else, it's worth taking one for a quick spin, just to see how it fits you.

I'll think about it and let you know. I might do a hotel but may camp out. I just bought a tent and sleeping bag. Might want to try it out.

I did TOSRV in 2002. It's flat, nothing even close to what we would
call a hill. But wind can be an issue, and weather is always iffy. I
ate at the Spaghetti Warehouse Friday night, great for carbo-loading.

Don't worry about a map or getting lost. There are so many riders, you
just follow the crowd.

The year I did it, there was a 20 mph tailwind on Sunday, until the
thunderstorm caught me just outside Columbus. Fastest I've ever ridden
without pedaling.

Well, I don't have the nickname "anchor" for nothing. I can go as fast as anyone, but only for a few minutes. Just ask Zarky.

Thanks for that! I'm sure that our group will eventually split up into smaller riding groups. That's okay with me. Keep it loose and fun.
