I'd like to take a moderately hard ride today or tomorrow, and,
actually, almost any Saturday, Sunday or Monday. (Next Saturday I go
to my family reunion in South Park.)
My goal is to keep my heart rate over 120 for at least an hour in each
direction. It would probably be a tedious pace for some of our fastest
riders, a normal pace average riders and a fast pace for some. I can
backtrack or take more baggage to even things out for slow bikers, but
can't adjust to fast bikers.
I'm in the East Liberty / Shadyside area, but that's not a big issue.
The routes could be fast rather than hilly. I haven't seen the
recently completed portion of the Great Allegheny Passage trail, so
that is a possibility. I could also take my trailer out to Robinson
Towne Centre and go shopping, but how many cyclists like suburban
shopping? Biking to a lake and swimming in that lake would be great.
I'm also interested in non-chlorinated swimming (particularly with
mask and fins), but I don't know much about where there are good
swimming places with clean water.
http://www.swimmingholes.org/pa.html
lists swimming holes, but I've never heard of the ones close by
Anyone familiar with Jackson Falls near Apollo and the Rock Furnace
Trail? It's on Rattling Run, which flows into Roaring Run. It appears
to be small for serious swimming, but it's only 31 miles each way, via
Saltsburg Road.
Creek Falls on Jacobs Creek sounds like another small but nice place,
about 50 miles (mostly rail trail), but secluded to the point that we
would have to tie our bikes up and hike to it.
Thorn Creek parallels Renfrew Road and is only 28 miles out Route 8,
via hilly Middle Road (to avoid the heavy traffic part of Route 8).
However, there is no description of the swimming hole, and the Google
satellite view makes it look like it's only deep relative to the rest
of the creek, which babbles through stones.
I'm certainly not averse to state parks, where I know the water isn't
polluted. Raccoon Creak State Park is 43 miles via the Panhandle Trail
(climbing Noblestown Road to get to Carnegie). It might be interesting
to bike up some Saturday morning, swim in the afternoon, camp in the
evening and return the next day.
Ohiopyle is wonderful for swimming, but 73 miles each way, which isn't
as bad as it sounds, given how flat the route is. Still, a long ride
up and a long ride back wouldn't leave much time for swimming. I don't
know where the swimming is safe and clean on the Yough. I checked the
internet and found someone saying it is polluted with sewage below
Sutersville, but it isn't too hard to get upstream of Sutersville.
Anyhow, let me know if you are interested in taking bike trips, with
or without swimming. I have an extra Linear, if you have someone who
would like to go along.
