Happy Summer Everyone!
With the resignation of our school's principal, comes the necessity to come together as a school community and advocate for a suitable replacement. The school district has a history of not fully understanding why and how our Montessori program differs from other schools. So, the possibility exists that they will not place much weight on replacing Cynthia Wallace with someone who has Montessori experience and/or certification.
In the past, when the school has experienced a change in leadership, it was the work of a group of well organized and vocal parents that was able to create a positive outcome. This time should be no different.
I have been busy doing some of the beginning of this work. Specifically, trying to schedule meetings with high level district folks, meeting with Principal Wallace before her departure, and asking some of our previous advocates for advice. Armed with a bit of information, I can say that now is the time for us to take action!
Here is what I would like to ask of everyone on this list:
1) Please send a letter or to Dr. Linda Lane and to David May- Stein.
Their mailing address is:
341 S. Bellefield Ave.
Pittsburgh, PA 15213
In your letter, please share a little about why our school is unique, important and NEEDS leadership that is knowledgeable about Montessori education. You can also have your children write as well (advocacy is a great learning experience!).
2) Sign up to speak at the school board's next public hearing
The next hearing will occur on Monday June 24 @ 6pm. If you would like to speak, you will need to call and register prior to noon on Monday. The number to call is
412-622-3868.
You will be given up to 3 minutes to speak to the board and it is suggested that you bring 15 copies of your statement to be given to board members. As of this afternoon, there are only a total of 5 people scheduled to speak. If you call soon, you can be near the top of the list and make an early departure when you are done. Students are also welcome and encouraged to address the board.
Please don't be at all intimidated by prospect of speaking to the school board. I've done it before and it's painless. I promise.
3) I would like to assemble a leadership team to help focus on this task. Can you be a part of that team? All are welcome!
That's it for now. If you have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me via email:
cassis...@hotmail.com or by phone:
412-512-8154Thanks Everyone!
