We’re writing today to ask you to take action to Protect Our Parks.
Because of concerns voiced by Allegheny County residents, County Council appears to be taking a more careful approach to Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald's plan to lease the County Parks for Marcellus shale gas fracking. We can protect our precious County Parks, but doing so will take more residents contacting Council members.
Even if you have already contacted your member of Council, they need to hear from you again, because of recent developments. Please read below for more information.
What can I do?
We have been told that even 10-15 messages to each Council member from their constituents could be enough to make the difference. For this reason, we are asking you to forward this message to your friends, relatives, and coworkers who live in all parts of the County, asking them to contact their member of Council.
How do I know who my Council member is?
The attached PDF file allows you to find your member of Council and contact them. Council Districts are numbered 1-13, and you can find your representative by looking for your borough or township on the list.
In addition, all Allegheny County residents are represented by County Executive Mr. Rich Fitzgerald, as well as at-large representatives Ms. Heather Heidelbaugh and Mr. John DeFazio. Please contact them as well.
What message should I
send?
1. Simply tell your Council member you want them to vote “no” to any lease that would allow fracking in or under County Park land. Here is a brief message you could modify, or send as-is.
----
Dear Council member ____________,
My name is ______, and I am very concerned to learn that Council is considering leasing our public park lands for shale gas drilling. Fracking does not belong in or under our county owned park land, and as my representative on Council, I urge you to vote “no” on allowing gas companies to use our public park lands for dangerous industrial operations like fracking. Please uphold your duty to preserve and protect our parks.
Sincerely,
[Name]

Is there anything else I could say that would help?
Two weeks ago, Council Member Barbara Daly Danko's proposed a 3-year moratorium on fracking in or under County Parks. Besides telling Council to oppose these leases, please tell your Council member you want them to support Ms. Danko’s moratorium ordinance. Whether or not it is successful in passing, this would send a strong message to the Council as well. (Mr. John Palmiere, who represents Council District 6 in the South Hills had originally co-sponsored this moratorium proposal, but has been on vacation, and withdrew his co-sponsorship for that reason. If you contact Mr. Palmiere or Ms. Danko, please thank them for willingness to stand up to Mr. Fitzgerald on this issue.)
How should I communicate this message?
Any one of three different ways:
1. Email your
Council member. Find their address on the attached PDF file. Or, to send a
message to ALL of council, not just your own
representative, simply copy and paste all of these addresses into a message:
exec...@alleghenycounty.us;
jdef...@alleghenycounty.us; hheide...@alleghenycounty.us;
mdr...@alleghenycounty.us; jr...@alleghenycounty.us; jb...@alleghenycounty.us; mfin...@alleghenycounty.us; kha...@alleghenycounty.us; jpal...@alleghenycounty.us;
nfut...@alleghenycounty.us;
cmar...@alleghenycounty.us; rma...@alleghenycounty.us; wrob...@alleghenycounty.us; bda...@alleghenycounty.us; jelle...@alleghenycounty.us;
agr...@alleghenycounty.us
2. Or, call your Council members by
using the phone numbers in the attached PDF, and leave your message with their staff or on their voicemail.
3. Or, if you are able, it is always helpful to have residents speak in person at a County Council meeting. Check the schedule of County Council meeting dates and request to comment. If you are able to attend this Tuesday, September 24th, please speak in support of Ms. Daly Danko’s 3-year moratorium ordinance.

Please – spend at least a minute or two to contact your representative on County Council. At the local level of government, just a few people can literally make the difference.
