For those still building and who haven't passed decision points on
engine monitoring systems, thanks to some great lobbying by Kendall
Simpson, JP Instruments have finally come to the party with an add-on
package to their experimental EDM 740 graphical engine monitor which
is tailored to the Model 12 (or rather, the M14P motor).

The new optional packages will add either:

1) fuel injection pressure + amps + air bottle pressure (0-1000psi),
or

2) air bottle pressure only

This now makes it capable of monitoring pretty much everything on the
plane except the kitchen sink water level (if you've decided to
install a kitchen sink). While everyone has their own views and
preferences on instrumentation, it's a well presented package for
simple folk like myself who like the "green band is good, flashing red
is bad" principle, graphical+numerical displays, or who dislike having
pages of information to scroll through to find stuff. It's not the
absolute cheapest around (for that, you'll need to visit the Wal-Mart
auto department), but then for what it does for engine monitoring, it
seems pretty good to me. Also I figure I've only got one motor, so I'd
like to know what it's thinking.

Mike

Oh, and Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from down under!

Hey Mike you beat me to it thanks. Just for clarification it will monitor any fuel pressure. You just need to let them know if you are running the low fuel pressure with the Carb or high pressure with the injection unit.

Also should be noted that the tach reading for the JPI requires and Coy tach mod for the air distributor and the UMA tach generator. Some have had trouble with this installation and there has been some failures of the tach reading with this set up.

I have checked with JPI and it seems the tach signal output of the new Barrett Gemini Electronic ignition system is compatible with the JPI 740. Still to be tested but should not require the air distributor adapter and UMA tach generator.
