Hey Kids!

Here goes the first P.C.C (Pitt Cycle Club) Newsletter of the fall 2006 term!  Our club is stronger than ever in this second school year come back after a three year hiatus.  We are coming into this year with a with a different look at our club and the approach we take to cycling.  Last year, our first year, we worked hard on getting a race team to represent our University at the enormous Eastern Collegiate Conference of Cycling (ECCC).  Our hard work payed off, as we were able to design and print jerseys, organize transportation to theses races, organize sponsorships, and even get a coach.  With so much activity being focused on the team, we regret to admit that we did not spend a of time on the percentile that makes up the majority of cyclists.  The ones that don't race!  So for this season, Pitt cycling is going to spend a lot of its time focusing on the non-racer, recreational rider, as well as focusing more time on mountain biking.  We feel that it is an awesome time to get out there and ride, and all the work that went into sponsorships and transportation for racing last year is gonna help all riders get to places they want to ride, and get them deals on things they need to keep the wheels rollin' this year.  If this sounds like fun, look at what we are doing this if you join the P.C.C.

Joe Ludington is our newest Pitt Cycling Club officer, our recreational ride coordinator.  He does not race, and he is not looking to get into it.  He like so many of us like to ride for the pure, simple fun of it.  Joe will be hosting two rides every weekend, Saturdays and Sundays.  These are fun, no-one-left-behind rides that will cover at most 30 miles.  Times will be at 10 AM at the WPU on the 5th Ave side.  Non-University people are welcome too, so bring a friend.  On Sundays, we are gonna be hosting the caffeine ride, at an announced time, in which a nice friendly ride wraps up with coffee at the end.  A great time is to be had so don't miss 'em!  Joe's next big thing is the Museum Ride/ Tour which is scheduled for September 24th.  A ride to the museum and a guided tour of a few exhibits is always a cool thing to do.  Food rides are also gonna be coming up, where small stops at restaurants will feature small courses, or samplings of food, all while riding there!

Evan, that's me, your secretary and mountain bike coordinator, is planing some new rides for this year.  We have our first scheduled Mountain bike ride set for Sunday, September 10th at Bavington state game lands, a truly awesome place to ride!  We shall meet at 10 AM at the Union (again 5th side)  to depart for the wondrous trails.  Look also for a weekly mountain bike ride, usually at Frick park, because of its proximity to Pitt we can ride there, and also it allows us to ride so many different trails!  Look for some e-mails on that stuff this upcoming week.

Dues, dues, dues...its an ugly business, but we gotta have em if we want to survive.  And ya know, they aren't all that expensive.  We are putting dues on two levels, the club dues, and the racer dues.  Regular dues cost 40 dollars, and you get a lot of benefits with that forty dollars.  With the 40 dollar membership you get full access to the club's office, which gives you full access to our large plethora of tools, to training books, repair books, maintenance books, and the like.  Our Pitt Jerseys are discounted to club members from the advertised price of $69.99 to the discounted price of $54.99.  In addition to this discount, you get 10% walk-in discounts at Trek of Pittsburgh, our official bike shop, and at Dave and Andy's ice-cream shop.  Just think, 3% below PA sales Tax, you could repay your 40 dollars through cheatin' the Government.  You also get good deals on Park Tools, at just 10% above wholesale!  You also get some discounts through spasport and deals on bikes at Trek of Pittsburgh.  If you need a bike for less, club dues will also get you our advice and assistance on piecing a budget bike together at Free Ride of Pittsburgh.  Weekend rides, such as the upcoming Museum ride are free as well!  With such great deals, it would be crazy not to join!  You also might be asking about the second level of membership, the "racer" level.

Now the racer level is required if you plan on racing for the University of Pittsburgh in any College-sanctioned event, but it is not exclusive to racers!!! Anyone can join at the racer level, and the standard 40 dollar membership can be upgraded any time, for an additional 40 dollars, not another whole 80 dollars.  The racer level expands on what you save through the normal club level by offering more discounts.  Jerseys go down to the price of 44.99, Park Tool discounts at 20% below wholesale, discounts on all Rudy Project glasses and helmets, and a 10% above cost price on anything at Trek of Pittsburgh, and the huge corresponding Trek bicycle book which includes everything ever needed to build, maintain, or upgrade any bike, as well as clothes, shoes, accessories, lights....umm...a lot.  Racer level also get you individualized coaching, that can be used for reasons other than racing.  If you wanna get healthy through cycling, personalized coaching is something to consider.

That should do it for now, I hope this club sounds like something you might be interested in, we are so passionate about bikes, and being able to share that with people is a great feeling, for me personally, the best feeling in the world :-)  If you have any questions/concerns or just wanna say hey, email any of us (Noah, Vice Prez < nl...@pitt.edu>, Dan Doan, President <db...@pitt.edu>, Paul, Road Race Coordinator, <pf...@pitt.edu>, Joe, Recreational Rides Coordinator < ja...@pitt.edu>, Evan, Secretary, Mountain Bike Coordinator fixier...@yahoo.com and Florian, Treasurer < fl...@pitt.edu

Remember the BBQ today!  2:45 the Union, we will take to to Schenley!
