This project is related to the Rhodes Airport project, which is another airport located on the Island of Rhodes, in Greece, both airports being managed by the same company, Fraport. For more details about the products used, click here.
The airport was constructed to replace the now-closed Athens (Ellinikon) International Airport, as the latter had reached its saturation point with no physical space for further growth.[7] Studies for a new airport had been carried out from as early as the 1970s, with as many as 19 different locations being looked at before an area close to the town of Spata was chosen as suitable.[7] Athens Airport SA, a state-owned company, was established in 1978 to proceed with the plans. However, after delays and slow development, the project was revived in 1991, approximately 1 year after the city lost the right to host the 1996 Summer Olympics to Atlanta, USA and the possibility of submitting a bid for the 2000 Game was discussed. However, the city presented the project that was eventually the winner for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, with the then government launching an international tender for the selection of a build-own-operate-transfer partner for the airport project, with Hochtief of Germany being selected.[7]
Hill International, who specialise in construction risk management, have been selected to provide project management support and on-call technical support services related to the upgrade, maintenance, management and operation of the selected airports.
As part of the project for further multi-level upgrading of the regional airports and having already completed the first phase of restructuring and reconstruction of the runway at Corfu Airport "Ioannis Kapodistrias," Fraport Greece, the operator of the 14 regional airports in Greece, will proceed to the second phase of the construction works, in this regard.
Indeed, Fraport Greece has drawn upon the full resources of Fraport AG and implementing this complex project demonstrates the capabilities and strengths of Fraport. Additionally, in 2017 the company won bids for two airports in Brazil and has signed an agreement in Peru for a major expansion of Lima Airport.
The project comprises the financing, design and construction of the expansion or refurbishment of a number of airports in Greece that are to be privatized by the Greek Government under a 40 year upgrade, maintenance, management and operation concession. The works represent the anticipated imminent capital expenditure requirements to address existing capacity shortfalls and current service level deficiencies at the airports.
The giant project included a major improvements at all 14 airports, 3 of which are located on the mainland (Thessaloniki, Kavala and Aktion) and 11 on the islands (Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Samos, Skiathos, Lesvos, Kos, Rhodes, Santorini, Corfu, Mykonos, and Crete).
The renovation of the regional airports is expected to bring a major boost to tourism around the country by facilitating more international flights to holiday destinations. Demand for these are expected to grow as tourism recovers and travelers seek to low-cost flights direct to their destinations.
The overall development project included the construction of five new airports, five extensions and refurbishments, four airport remodels, the construction and renovation of 12 fire stations and the renovation of 12 runways, as well as the installation of modern luggage management and explosives detection systems.
The EB/Architects team, as part of our cooperation with OBERMEYER SA, were involved in the design of two of the 14 airports. We prepared the preliminary study for the Rhodes airport for Fraport, while in 2017 we undertook the refurbishment and expansion of Skiathos Airport, in all stages from Architectural Concept to the production of Issued for Construction documentation. You can see more about this project here.
Our company was founded 2017 and today it is active in 35 stores in 7 Greek airports and in the Largest Greek Exhibition Center. Its mission is mainly to develop food service concepts in captive markets internationally, such as in premium POS in the street markets.
Nature lover volunteers with a creative streak can also volunteer as graphic designers for one of the organizations. The options seem endless because volunteers can also support the conservation of the Greek archipelago by volunteering for media and public relations. Attract international support for the project through global media.
As you will have noticed by now, there is a variety of projects that expect different skills and abilities from their volunteers. Some will require volunteers to stay for a certain amount of time for example. While you can find out the specific requirements for each project on their program page, here are some general requirements apply to most projects while you participate in an international project in Greece:
Description: The project includes the implementation of the construction studies and works at the 14 Greek regional airports, namely the refurbishment and upgrading of existing airport infrastructures, as well as the study and construction of extensions.
We find sustainable ways to move people across cities, countries and continents. In Greece, our key strength includes project and construction management services for transportation infrastructure clients. Our presence in Greece, established in 1997, has always been defined by this core focus on civil infrastructure. We provide a comprehensive range of services that cover the scope of a project from pre-award to construction. We have provided engineering and consulting services on projects ranging from highways, metros, and airports to ports, bridges and tunnels.
ECRA is a paradigm shift in relation to the role that regional airports have in the European ATM Network, allowing them to have a more proactive role, and pushing them to reach the best levels in terms of airport-network connectivity and data exchange. Cooperation is also underway to include smaller airports in France, Sweden and Poland. The project allows the Airport Operations Plan to be synchronised with the Network Operations Plan, and reinforces aircraft ground surveillance based on the use of ADS-B receivers installed at airports.
A leading player in the global airport business, more than 176 million passengers use airports where Fraport owns more than a 50% stake in. This includes 14 regional airports in Greece, from the Aktion National Airport to Zakynthos, that Fraport manages. As part of a major project to modernise these airports, Fraport asked for our help.
These newly upgraded airports should provide a big help if this tourist season is anything like Greece is hoping for. At the very least, it is going to provide for distancing at these airports due to the size upgrades and the likely drop in passenger traffic from when these projects began four years ago.
