Dear all,

This week's Thursday sees our Annual General Meeting coming up at which the new PIR Society committee is elected.
Thursday, 21 March, 7pm at seminar room 3, Chrystal Macmillan Building

The following positions are available: President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, Leviathan Editor-In-Chief, Social Secretary and Webmaster. Brief descriptions of each post can be found on the facebook event page. In addition, each current office-holder will give a short summary of the key features of their role at the event itself.
The elections for the new committee are vital for the continued existence of the Society so please do come along to vote, even if you are not intending to stand for a position. Every subscribed member has a vote.

We would also like to invite you to two exciting lectures taking place very soon:

Lecture and Q&A with former Hungarian PM Ferenc Gyurcsany
Friday, 22 March, 5.30 - 7.30pm at lecture theatre 2, Appleton Tower
Mr. Ferenc Gyurcsany was the sixth Prime Minister of the Republic of Hungary from 2004 to 2009, taking office shortly after Hungary entered the EU.
Mr Gyurcsany will deliver a lecture focusing on Central Eastern Europe and the European Union. (The event is free of charge and does not require registration)

Lecture by Barry Buzan: "The Outlook for China's Peaceful Rise"
Thursday, 28 March, 6pm at lecture theatre 183, Old College
Prof. Barry Buzan is one of the most prestigious contemporary IR scholars; he has been described by Michael Cox as "one of the big beasts of IR".
In his long career, his writings have varied from IR theory, securitization and now history of IR.
Do not miss this! It should be a very rare opportunity to hear from someone with such standing in the field and on a topic that is central to contemporary international politics.

This event is ticketed with £1/£2 entry for members/non-members.
Details on where and when to purchase tickets will be posted to the facebook event. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door on the evening of the talk.

Lastly, PIR Soc has been nominated for the EUSA Society Oscars in the category best international society. We would greatly appreciate your support at the awards ceremony and Society Oscars party in Teviot on Saturday, 23 March, 6pm which promises to be a lot of fun! (Facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/events/209111119233387/?fref=ts)

If you have any questions about any of our upcoming events please just drop us an email. If you would like to purchase a ticket for the SPS Ball you can post your query directly to the facebook page http://www.facebook.com/events/205486302930420/?fref=ts

Have a good week!

Best wishes,

Valerie Greitens
