Dear all,

A big thanks for everyone who came to our meeting last week, we in the committee enjoyed the discussions very much and hope you have also. Here's your weekly society update:

Weekly Meeting

Thursday, September 27, 7pm to 9pm, in Seminar Room 3, Chrystal Macmillan Building. This week are hosting another Politics and IR Forum, with the topics "Rio+20 UN Climate Change Conference" and "The Situation in Syria".

For those who are coming to one of our meetings for the first time, they work like this: 1) 5-10 minute briefings on a topic in current affairs presented by a member of the society. 2) The briefings are then followed by an open discussion, when all attendants are invited (but not in any sense obligated) to participate.

As usual, we will be going to a pub after meeting for drinks and casual chat.

Confirmed Guest Lectures

"Understanding the Research Process" - Wednesday, October 17, 7pm to 9pm, Lecture Theatre 2, Appleton Tower. In this series of lectures we invite staff from the Politics and IR Department to present on their research: the methods utilised, challenges and outcomes obtained. This October our guests will be Dr. Mark Aspinwall, head of Politics and IR http://www.pol.ed.ac.uk/staff_profiles/aspinwall_mark, and Dr. Daniel Kenealy http://www.pol.ed.ac.uk/staff_profiles/daniel_kenealy.

For November 9, Sir William Patey, former British Ambassador to Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and Sudan, will be delivering a lecture to the society about security issues in the Middle East and British diplomacy in the region. Venue to be confirmed.
