Confidence is a fundamental aspect of your young athlete's journey, but where does it come from? It's a question that often preoccupies the minds of parents and athletes alike. Sometimes, it may appear that certain individuals are just naturally more confident, whether they're on the playing field or navigating life. However, I'm here to tell you that confidence is not a predetermined trait, and those who seem less confident are not condemned to remain that way.
**4. Having the Right Tools and Skills:** Confidence is not a solo journey. It's about equipping your teen athletes with the skills and knowledge to navigate the ups and downs of their sport and life. Confidence isn't about eliminating adversity; that's going to be there no matter what. What confidence is about is how you get through that adversity. With the right tools, skills, techniques, and practices, we can all manage emotions and mental blocks in a way that not only builds confidence but improves performance as well.
During the transformative four weeks I spent at RISE, I not only crafted cherished memories but also honed essential life skills. From mastering culinary arts to mastering the art of networking, RISE For Youth illuminated the path, revealing that minorities can indeed have a competitive edge. Unlike many programs that may seem condescending in their approach to minorities, RISE embraced our talents and aspirations, lifting us up and showcasing the unique potential each of us possessed. Whether it was embarking on insightful field trips or sharing emotions as a united group, the profound impact of the experience reverberated on multiple levels.
One distinct memory etched deep in my heart and soul is the time we recorded our podcast, a poignant moment of reflection. As I looked into the eyes of each friend, a profound sense of understanding and vulnerability intertwined, moving me to tears. In that moment, I realized that I had discovered my chosen family within RISE, a realization that touched me in ways I had never experienced before. My journey at RISE diverged from any other life experience, as for the first time, I felt truly heard, cherished and embraced.

Celebrating 40 years of life with 4 fabulous friends who have been with me over half of the journey (some almost all 40 years) in Los Cabos has taught me a lot about both friendship and life and the resilience it takes to maintain both.
The happiness we experience along our journey in life will be enlarged by our service to others. In days where you are feeling low, or it seems the world is collapsing around you, my promise to you is that you will find relief and comfort as you look outside yourself to help others.
The primary objective? To empower these coaches to address critical issues such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), family planning, voluntary counselling and testing (VCT), voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC), safeguarding, sexual consent, and life skills. This training was more than just an educational journey; it sought to inspire girls who had previously dropped out of school to return.
Fifth, enjoy the journey. The people of God are a joyful people. We understand there are times for sobriety, reverence, and devotion; we also understand that we possess the joyful principles of eternal life.

Around the world girls and young women face barriers to education caused by poverty, cultural norms, and practices, crisis, or violence. Women learn labor and life skills, have economic power and stability, and contribute to their families and communities, enabling them to be more informed about nutrition and healthcare and powering them with the tools and opportunities to rise above poverty.
Herbert Gustavo Simões, 46, is a Professor at the Catholic University of Brasilia with postdoctoral research experience at University of Miami in the area of physical education and exercise physiology. He is also a keen sporting enthusiast, currently ranked as one of the world's fastest 110 metre hurdlists in his age bracket. Herbert is one of two lead trainers working with UNODC in Brazil as part of the Doha Declaration Global Programme sports initiative which looks to build vital life skills among 13 - 18 year olds to keep them safe from violence, crime and drugs.
After this, I began to re-evaluate things. Some of my friends had already begun experimenting with alcohol and drugs. But for me, I had started to look ahead in life for the first time. I was breaking some track records in my age group and I enjoying the training process. I started to realize the importance of studying, to have rules and structure: all the sort of things which we are discussing as part of this UNODC sports against youth crime programme, but in a far less organized way. As I got older, my coach really played a positive influence on my life and things started changing. While I still hung out with my friends - some of whom I'm still in contact with today - I stayed away from drugs and avoided drinking. I knew that my destiny would be something different.
