All,

Center to end distance of the elbow

·        The standard radius of bending of the elbow as per ASME B16.9 is two types

1.      long radius

2.      short radius

·        long radius means the radius of the center line circle of the elbow is 1.5*D (where D is the nominal pipe size)

·        short radius means the radius of the center line circle of the elbow is 1*D (where D is the nominal pipe size)

·        to calculate the center to end distance for elbow with any angle (θ°elbow ) consider  figure 1 (shown below)

a: the center to end distance of the elbow (to be calculated)

R: The radius of bending of the elbow

θ: the elbow angle(degree of bending)

tan (θ/2)= a/R

a = R * tan (θ/2)

in case of long radius R = 1.5 * D

So,  a = 1.5 D * tan (θ/2)

NOTES:

·        θ in degrees

·        D in inches

·        In case of elbow 90° the equation will be simplified to  (a = 1.5*D )

·        To convert “a “ to SI units multiply by 25.4
