Mastermind groups are relatively new to most people, even though Napoleon Hill created the concept around 75 years ago with his book, Think and Grow Rich. A mastermind group is designed to help you navigate through challenges using the collective intelligence of others.

How does a mastermind work? A group of smart people meet weekly, monthly, daily even if it makes sense, to tackle challenges and problems together. They lean on each other, give advice, share connections and do business with each other when appropriate. It's very much peer-to-peer mentoring and if you are lucky enough to get invited to one, you will most likely see a marked change in yourself and your business.

1. You'll be part of an exclusive community. Joining a mastermind typically involves you being invited by the members or going through an application process. The other members need you just as much as you need them, so quality of experience and knowledge is crucial to all involved.

2. Advisement. Once you are involved in a mastermind, that feeling of "being alone" while running your business is gone. The other members of the group turn into business advisors of sorts and vice versa.

3. Collaboration is the name of the game. You may find someone in the group that is a perfect fit to work on a project with you. Or, you may be the perfect person to help another member as well. The group works together collaboratively, to achieve more together.

4. Extend your network. Joining a mastermind expands your network exponentially and rapidly. If you are in business, you know how important your network is. By joining a mastermind, you instantly add to your network and typically gain the networks of those in the group with you.

5. New learning. Everyone in the mastermind is unique in skill, experience and connections. By interacting and sharing your challenges, it's almost certain that someone in your mastermind will have a solution for you and you may also be able to offer a solution, connection or tactic to help another in the group.

6. Cross-promotion. When you join a mastermind, you will most likely find ways to help each other by utilizing cross promotion. Finding ways to help each other through promoting to your respective networks.

The mastermind group process focuses on one thing: helping you make the changes you want to make in your life. First, you create a goal, a vision for how things will be in the future. Then, with the help of the other members, you design a step-by-step plan to achieve your goals. The group helps you with creative ideas and wise decision-making. Then, as you begin to implement your plan, you bring both success stories and problems to the group. Success stories are applauded (loudly!), and problems are solved through peer brainstorming and collective, creative thinking.

Each meeting has a mastermind group agenda so that conversations stay highly-focused. The facilitator is tasked with making sure that conversations are deep and balanced, and that all mastermind group meeting agenda items are covered in the time allotted.

The popularity of mastermind groups is growing worldwide, as people like you are creating success through brainstorming with your peers, solving problems, generating creative ideas, designing strong action plans, and holding each other accountable.

Jaime fills in all the gaps that were missing in my previous posts about mastermind groups and mentorship, including downloadables for the structure of a meeting and a worksheet to help you find group members. Enjoy!

Here is one example of how a mastermind group helped millionaire Tim Hamilton, owner of Astonished Designs. He was very open in his interview and explained the huge amount of fear he experienced as a business owner. One of the catalysts that help him get past his fear was his mastermind group.

I started exploring the ways that mastermind groups worked. Some of them met in person. Some of them existed through Google Hangouts. However, they all had a common theme of providing emotional support while also helping one another with practical, strategic thinking.

So this has me thinking about classroom teachers. What if we formed mastermind groups on our own? What if we created spaces away from the noisy echoes of social media? What if we shared our strengths and weaknesses? What if we told stories? What if we asked for advice from one another? What if we had a space where we could share our lesson plans, unit plans, materials, and projects with each other?

Two years ago, my son went to the hospital. It was only kidney stones, but because he has only one kidney, we thought it might be worse. We were scared that his one kidney was failing. So, when his temperature spiked above 104 degrees, I started thinking about the worst case scenario. I remember being away at the time, crumbling down like a paper bag in the hotel room, sobbing bathroom floor, feeling helpless as my wife sat with my son who seemed to be sliding into a worse and worse place.

On top of that, I felt alone and burned out. But then I joined my first mastermind group changed all of that for me. I got new insights, was challenged in fresh ways, and was encouraged to dream bigger and try new things. And my business grew!

Instead of looking for new knowledge, I looked for like-minded entrepreneurs who were committed to my success and held me accountable. I found these in one-off friendships, people I met at conferences, and multiple paid mastermind groups.

As I shared in Episode 330, after Amy Porterfield and I recorded a podcast all about her new book, we hopped on a plan to Napa for a girls weekend/business mastermind with our good friend, Britt Seva.

Amy, Britt, and I have been in larger masterminds together over the years and each time we worked together in a small group, magic happened. As 2022 was coming to an end, we wanted to set aside this time to connect, ask the hard questions, support each other, and get clear on our visions for 2023.

Did you know that half of all businesses are closed within their first year, 80% are gone within five years and that 96% of all businesses fail within 10 years? That means that only 4% of all businesses last more than 10 years. That just means that they are "still standing," even if they are not "profitable."

My name is Cliff Ravenscraft and I know just how difficult it is to get a business off the ground. In 2008, I left a successful 12-year career in the insurance industry to pursue my own journey of full-time, self-employment, so that I could do the work that I felt most called to do in this world.

I am thankful for all the sales training and customer service experience that those years as an insurance agent provided. However, having lived a lifetime as an "employee" up to that point, I realized, real quickly, just how much I didn't know about what it took to actually own and operate my own business.

My first full year of full-time self-employment was riddled with self-doubt, overwhelm from all that I was being told I needed to do, and lack of clarity of what I needed to focus on next. As a result, that first year was the most difficult year, financially, that I have ever experienced in my lifetime. Not only that, I had never felt so "alone" in what I was trying to do in the world.

I can tell tell you that those difficult times were definitely worth it. However, with that said, looking back from the perspective of knowing what I know today, I now realize that things didn't have to be quite so hard.

Watch the video below to understand the value of the Mastermind Group and learn how it can it can help you accomplish more in a single year than you could hope to accomplish on your own.

A mastermind group, as I define it, is two or more individuals, who join together in a spirit of perfect harmony, that meets on a consistent basis and where each member of the group is 100% committed to the success of every other member in the group."

Hill stated, that through your participation in a healthy mastermind group, "you may borrow and use the education, the experience, the influence and perhaps the capital of other people in carrying out your own plans in life."

In October 2010, I was working with Pat Flynn, helping him launch his "Smart Passive Income" podcast. Through our conversations, I learned that he had recently discovered the mastermind principle as well. I knew that Pat was someone that I would trust to enter into a mastermind relationship with, so I asked him if he would join me in the start of our own mastermind group. He said yes and our personal and professional lives have grown in ways that neither of us would have imagined at the time. You can learn more about how Pat and I met and the origin story of our mastermind group in episode 2 of my Upgrade Your Peer Group Podcast.

Our mastermind group has met on a weekly basis since October 2010.
