Pino Talk -

I hope this note finds everyone healthy and doing well staying at home or riding where that's allowed.

While we're on a stay at home order here in California, my wife and I would be able to ride if we had our Pino.

I took our Pino to our bike shop for a spring tune and to deal with a seized front brake caliber just before the closures started.  The shop discovered a crack in the frame (it's a 2012).  Hase has been very responsive and a new frame is in transit from Germany.

As this is the opportunity for a major rebuild and upgrade, I am wondering about going with a Rohloff internal hub.

Any experience with with Rohloff hubs or advice would be welcome.

Thanks very much,

Mark

Wouldn't be without our Rohloff. On our first test ride we were storming up a small incline on a narrow lane and met a big farm vehicle so we stopped and we were stuck on a slope in too high a gear.

Everyone off the tandem, lift up the rear wheel, spin the pedals and operate the gears, complete pain.

The Rohloff is so relaxing, especially around town where you might have to stop at any moment in traffic or at lights. I also have one on my solo recumbent for the same reason. No downside apart from the cost.

Call us old fashion - or just old....
But when we extend 100 km worth of effort we want to look up and the 100km signpost not the 91 or 92!
We sell em to those who insist and have been to Rohloff factory training at  Hase workshops in Germany but dang if you’d catch us with an internal
Hub on any of our own machines

I fitted a Rohloff to our Pino and wish I'd done it sooner. For a while I had the triple chainring so we had plenty of gears. Spent most of the time in the middle ring 38, but had a 28 and 48 to use depending on terrain etc.

After cycling through France last year and having a pacemaker fitted in late 2018 I decided to convert the Pino to e-assist and bought a Bafang from China along with a 17.5Ah battery. Very pleased! No need for the triple with the assist if we need it, so I have a 44T chainring – to a 15T sprocket and that gives us all we need. You can see the conversion here, but there's also a pic of the Rohloff Shifter on a bar end.

Hi Bob, What's the noise level like on the Bafang? Our Heinzmann non-geared hub motor is silent and that's one of the reasons why we chose it, but it's always been temperamental. Typical German design, all passion and style but not reliable.

Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris, there is some noise from the motor but Karon notices it more than me (I have hearing aids). I notice it if we are above the cut-off speed but usually have the motor off if we don’t need it, so it’s not very often.

I’d say, yes there’s noise but not enough to be annoying or detract from the advantages of the system.

Sue and I are both very happy with our Rohloff hubs. We have them on five machines: Pino, ICE Sprint, Hase Kettwiesel, ICE Sprint, Brompton and R&M Delite. Even Sue’s Tern Vektron has an IGH albeit an Alfine 11 (home built wheel as it’s not a commercial option). The first Rohloff has now done over 41000 km and we’ve totalled >67000 km between the five.

The Rohloff may not be quite as efficient as a clean new chain on a new derailleur when it’s in a gear with a straight chain line but I’ll put up with that to avoid the cleaning and maintenance issues, the long-term reliability and have the ability to change gear at a standstill (very important IMHO for a tandem).

When a derailleur is running with the chain offline, especially these days with 10, 11 and even 12 speed cassettes, there’s not going to be much difference in efficiency. See this paper
for some comparisons, albeit with an older 7 speed derailleur.

All the best Phil.

PS PinoTalk has gone very quiet these days. Is everyone on the Hase Pino Owners Facebook group?

PPS there’s also a Rohloff Speedhub International Owners Facebook group should anyone be interested.

I spend my time on Facebook and the Hase and Rohloff pages thereon., Though I get emails from this forum, so if anyone does post, I'll know.  I find forums in general a little less immediate that FB, although there's no denying, at least with a forum you tend to get what you came for, whereas on FB there's a lot of rubbish to try and ignore.

Isobel and I started this email group back when Facebook wasn't the discussion medium of choice for grumbling old people. But these days I'm more likely to use Facebook. Thanks for the heads-up on the Pino Facebook group.
