Pink Floyd's new DVD 'Pulse' is flying off shelves

Twelve years after the band's last studio album, Pink
Floyd has another hit on its hands: on DVD.

Since its release in mid-July, the two-disc set
"Pulse" (Sony, $25) has been the nation's top-selling
music DVD. In Billboard's Sept. 30 issue, "Pulse"
remains at No. 1 on the top music video chart. It has
held that spot for two months, except when it dropped
to No. 2 the week of Sept. 16, when Dream Theater's
"Score 20th Anniversary World Tour Live" (Rhino, $25)
was No. 1.

The DVD's live concert performance captures David
Gilmour (guitar and vocals), Rick Wright (keyboards)
and Nick Mason (drums) during their 1994 "Division
Bell" tour. After 1983's "The Final Cut" album, those
three band members parted ways with bassist Roger
Waters, who failed in his legal attempts to prevent
them from using the band's name.

Compared with most top-selling movie DVDs, which sell
hundreds of thousands of copies in a week, top music
DVDs sell in the thousands. So far, "Pulse" is selling
at a rate behind only two other previous releases,
"Led Zeppelin" (2003) and last year's "The Eagles
Farewell 1 Tour - Live From Melbourne," according to
Columbia Records.

Overall, "Pulse" has sold about 250,000 copies on DVD.
The Recording Industry Association of America has
certified "Pulse" multiplatinum (a 1995 VHS version
has sold 279,000 copies).

The DVD includes the band's performance of "The Dark
Side of the Moon" in its entirety on Disc 2, and that
has "something to do with this," says Billboard's
director of charts, Geoff Mayfield.

That album has spent nearly 30 years on Billboard's
album charts since its 1973 release and is now No. 2
on the Top Pop Catalog chart. "It's an appetite that
doesn't seem to be sated. ("Pulse") looks right at
home there (at No. 1), considering the ongoing appeal
of the repertoire," Mayfield says.

Also on the DVD is the band's 1996 Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame induction ceremony and bootleg video footage.

Drummer Mason says the DVD's "picture quality is
enhanced, but the most important thing is the 5.1
(surround) soundtrack. I didn't expect it to be that
much better."

Two weeks ago at Madison Square Garden, Mason reunited
with Waters to perform "Dark Side of the Moon" in its
entirety.

"What I've noticed in the last year or so, playing it
again and listening to it, is how relevant the lyrics
are to an older generation," Mason says. "Even though
we were in our 20s when we were working on it, the
lyrics could have been written for 50-year-olds."
