At the urge of her three best friends, Nam follows the advice of the guidebook called Nine Recipes of Love, which can supposedly win the affection of the man of your dreams if followed closely. Some of the methods described in the book sound outlandish to Nam at first but she willingly tries them all eventually. These include spelling Chon's name on the stars, controlling his mind, and leaving chocolates on his motorbike - all in a seemingly futile attempt to get noticed by him. Over the course of the summer, she tries to improve her looks by wearing braces, switching from glasses to contacts, and doing all sorts of skin regiments.
At the beginning of eighth-grade, Nam and her friends get into a scuffle with her schoolmate, Faye, while signing up for after-school clubs. As a consequence, Nam and her friends are barred from signing up to the popular Thai Dance Club. Instead, their English teacher, Teacher Inn, connives them into signing up for the English Drama Club, becoming part of the school production of Snow White in the upcoming school fair. To Nam's surprise, she finds Chon working in the production as a stage painter. She is then picked by Teacher Inn to play the titular role since she is the best in English in her class. She also befriends Pin, a female upperclassman and one of Chon's close friends, who is recruited by Teacher Inn to be the makeup artist for the school play. Pin gives Nam a makeover and when she asks for his opinion, Chon only replies that he doesn't see any difference. During rehearsals, Chon saves Nam from falling off the stage. On the day of the play, Chon is noticeably absent and Nam assumes he went to see the Thai Dance Club. In actuality, he is coerced by the school superintendent to participate in a photography contest that happens to be on the same day as the school fair. Later at the backstage, she sees an apple with a bite in it left on her station with a note saying that they tasted the apple and it isn't poisoned. Nam quickly becomes a hot topic in their school when footage of her performance is shown at the school cafeteria. Meanwhile, Chon's childhood friend, Top, transfers to their school in the middle of the year. After seeing Nam in the school play, Top falls in love at first sight.
Chon candidly opens up to Nam about her father. He tells her that he was born on the day his father missed the penalty shot and feels that he is the reason why his father has given up on soccer. During a friend's birthday party, Top shares the story about a promise he made with Chon: that they would never like the same girl. In the middle of the celebration, Top suddenly kisses Nam on the cheek much to her discomfort. Later that night, Nam tells Top to not involve himself with her any more and that he didn't have the right to kiss her as she never agreed to be his girlfriend in the first place. She tells him that she is in love with someone else but doesn't tell him who. Out of distraught, Top makes Chon promise that he will not pursue Nam. Without any more friends, Nam begins to focus her time on studying for the finals.
As the end of the year approaches, Nam has a tearful reconciliation with her three best friends. In the following days, she learns that she ranked first in school, which means that it's only a matter of time before she is bound for America. The Cheer Gang gets together for one last time to help Nam finish the unwritten "tenth recipe" of the love guidebook: direct confession. With the help of her friends, Nam plucks up the courage to go to Chon and finally confesses her feelings for him. She tearfully reveals that she has been in love with him for the past three years and hands him a rose trimmed from the same rose bush that he gave her on Valentine's, along with Mr. Button. However, to her dismay, Chon reveals that he had begun dating Pin about a week ago, which leaves Nam visibly hurt and heartbroken. That night, Chon comes home to find out that he is accepted into the trainee program of the Bangkok Glass Football Club but has to leave for the camp the following morning. He goes into his room and takes out a notebook containing all of Nam's photos. It is revealed that Chon has been in love with Nam all these years and has kept a diary in hopes of revealing his true feelings to her one day. But as it turned out, he never mustered the courage to do and the timing couldn't have been worse. He leaves the diary in front of Nam's house before leaving for Bangkok. At the same time, Nam is shown crying in her bedroom.
Nine years later, Nam has made a name for herself as a successful fashion designer in New York. She returns to Thailand after being invited as a guest in a TV talk show. She talks about her career and recounts her days in her old school. As soon as the topic of her first love is brought up, she gets a surprise visit from Chon who is revealed to have given up his soccer career in order to pursue professional photography. Chon takes out Mr. Button and returns it to Nam, telling her that she's mistaken it as his. Nam then asks Chon if he has been married, to which he replies that he has been waiting for someone to return from the U.S. after all these years.
I'm more of a kdrama person but I watch the occasional Cdrama too and I really loved it! It's a little slow but that just gives you more time to learn about the characters (it's not boring) and I just love how her transformation is step by step. Hated Lin Kaitou for what he did bc c'mon boi you should know better but yeah. The scene where she's supposed to get a makeover just backfiring on her is practically all teens. The product placements are very weirdly placed but the one about her sis buying it for her was still cute.
Crazy Little Called Love (2010) is a Thailand romantic comedy starring Fern Pimchanok Leuvisedpaibul (as Nam) and Mario Maurer (as Shone). Nam is a high school girl who is secretly in love with her senior, Shone. Shone is a charming 10th-grade-student who interested in photography and football. He often teased by his schoolmate because his father failed to take penalty shoot on the football cup. Eventhough, many girls are still crazy for him, including Nam.
Miao Miao, experiencing the wonder of first love, began to change slowly. She felt like she has to be a better person to deserve even the slight attention of You Nian. She began to study hard and aimed to achieve her dream of becoming a fashion designer. Because of You Nian her grades became above average and she got accepted in the University of her choice. Her physical transformation was also subtle and each change became the sign of time passing by until finally she was already a college student.
Miao Miao and her family were also heartwarming to watch. I love how theirs was portrayed like any normal family, with siblings fight, nagging mother and a father out to work. At the second half of the series, her moments with her mother made me cry and also made me emotional. It was because those scenes showed how Miao Miao really grew up from a timid girl to a young woman who knows what she wants to do with her life and has the guts to make it happen.
I also find it interesting how there were other love lines in this drama aside from the main characters. Every love line has its own moments throughout the story. Most of the time, there were annoying and frustrating scenes. But I can forgive because they were young and really bound to make mistakes because of uncontrolled emotions and inability to express their selves properly. Fortunately, each character grew up too.
This drama might be a light romantic series centered on first love, but it was also about setting your goals and fulfilling your dreams. The drama showed that if you really want something, you can achieve it if you work hard for it.
When Miao Miao said this to You Nian, I literally cried. She fell in love and it has been unrequited for years but instead of being sad she made her feelings a fuel to change herself. Because of her feelings for You Nian, she became the version of herself that she can be proud of. It shows that love can bring positive changes in a person. That it can be an inspiration and not distraction. That love can make you brave.
When I feel love, I feel a hesitant warmth take over. A natural pessimist, I approach love carefully, watching over my shoulder for any sudden attack. I endure love but also soak in it. It oozes out of me, and I suck it in from others. I retaliate from rejection. I bathe in admiration. I love how jarring love can be and fear its emptiness at times. Love is as dark as it is light, as filling as it is a leech on my skin, like a dementor taking all the happiness out from inside me. It is also a fuzzy touch and a sopping kiss, but a horrible look down the hallway of the future of goodbyes that stare ahead of me. Love, to me, is frantic and exciting. The lightest and heaviest weight I will ever feel.
A Professor of mine, a photographer, offered some beautiful advice to his students on a sunny Tuesday afternoon. He insisted that when photographing a subject, a sole person, and you wish to capture an emotion, do not ask for the literal. When he hopes to see a subject emote happiness and capture their smile, he tells them to imagine something warm and soft. On the contrary, to capture grief or sorrow, he tells his subject to imagine something heavy and stiff. When you, a writer, wish to capture love, loss, grief, lust, or any synonyms of the latter, a similar exercise may be appropriate.
I eavesdropped for the next couple minutes of their conversation, and ice cream was not discussed again. With that, I got up stealthily and asked the waiter to send the lovebirds two whisky ice creams on me. We continued with our meal and conversation.
Witnessing that lifelong love and friendship was everything. I had a moment of clarity, that I would never do anything again that might get in the way of me getting that for myself when I was old and grey.
Ever since the news that Lai Kuan Lin is having his acting debut, I have been looking forward for it. Just in case you don't know, Lai Kuan Lin is actually my bias in Wanna One. Even if Wanna One has disbanded, I still continue to support the members.
Anyway, news reported that Lai Kuan Lin will be starring on the Chinese adaptation of my favorite Thai movie, Crazy Little Thing Called Love. This made me more excited. My favorite Wanna One member + my favorite movie = a total combination. But because I was a bit busy with my internship, I was not able to watch it while it was still on-going. I just finished watching it last February 2020.
There may be some spoilers here on this review.
About A Little Thing Called First Love (2019)Title: A Little Thing Called First Love ( 初恋那件小事)Episodes: 36 episodesAiring Period: October 23, 2019 - November 21, 2019Characters:
Liang You Nian played by Lai KuanlinXiao Miao Miao pkayed by Angel ZhaoLin Kai Tuo played by Wang Run ZeHe Xin played by Chai WeiLin Xia played by Wang Yi MiaoWang Yi Chao played by Wang Bo WenFang Xiao Yue played by Zhu Jin Tong
Plot: It is a story of an ordinary girl (Xiao Miao Miao) who develops a crush with the famous guy (Liang Younian) in school. Because of her feelings for him, she decided to change herself for the better. She studied hard, fixed her physical appearance, and improved her skills.
Fact: Like what I have mentioned earlier, this is an adaptation of the Thai movie, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, starring Mario Maurer and Baifern Pimchanok which was released in 2010.
Things I like about A Little Thing Called First Love (2019)They maintained most of the key scenes from the original
These are just some of the scenes that they have presented, there were a lot more in the series, which made me really really happy. This drama served as an ultimate throwback from those good times.
The gradual change of Xiao Miao Miao
Since this a series, it was able to show Miao Miao's change in a gradual way. It first started with her teeth, then her skin and hair. It didn't happen overnight. In fact, during these changes, she even encountered having allergies on her faces.
They added new love storiesBecause I already know what may happen to the two leads, I became more focused on the other two love teams - He Xin and Lin Kai Tuo, and Wang Yi Chao and Fang Xiao Yue. They weren't in the original film which only means their story is new. Those two love teams added the thrill to this series.
There were times when I got bored with Liang Younian and Xiao Miao Miao but good thing these other two love teams were there to make me laugh.
He Xin and Lin Kaituo
He Xin is Xiao Miao Miao's friend and Liang Younian's cousin. Lin Kaituo is Liang Younian's step-brother (they are not really blood-related). In their love story, He Xin is the first one who likes Lin Kaituo but unlike Miao Miao, He Xin is a bit of a strong woman.
She always confesses to Kaituo, followed him, does anything for him. But they always fight because Kaituo has anger issues.
Yi Chao and Xiao Yue
On this love team, it's the other way around. The guy (Yi Chao) was the one who keeps on following Xiao Yue. Both of them are Liang Younian's friends. That's why there are times when Younian became the mediator of the two.
Bonus: Love story between their professors
Another fun thing in this series is that, they also added a love linear (Lu Peng doesn't like anyone) between the professors. It's just so funny that everyone here ended up with nobody yet they still have these feelings.
The series was a bit of a slice-of-lifeOne of the things that I noticed here was that Miao Miao's mother and Younian's father never liked the course or major that they were taking.
Miao Miao's mother wanted her to take Architecture because it's the best in the country and may bring lots of money to her in the future but Miao Miao wanted to take fashion design. On the other hand, Younian's father doesn't want him to take Architecture because of what happened to Younian's mother. He doesn't want his son to experience such accidents too.
This issue is already a common thing. Most of the times, parents never liked the courses or majors that their kids take because of some reasons. But at the end of the day, it's the kid who will live his or her own life. So I hope parents will just be supportive.
Another thing here is the issue between Younian and Kaituo. Since Younian's mother died and Kaituo's mother is divorced, Younian's father and Kaituo's mother decided to be together which was against their children's will. And that bruised Younian's and Kaituo's friendship.
Things I somehow disliked with A Little Thing Called First Love (2019)It was clearly seen that Younian liked Miao MiaoOne of the most memorable thing that happened in the original was that Nam didn't know that Shone actually liked her. And that's the main point of the story. Unfortunately on this series, it was clearly seen that Younian liked Miao Miao.
When the two of them started dating (which never happened in the original), I somehow lost my interest in them. I don't know but I started skipping some parts because I find it a little cringey already. The pool part, yes it was there, but I didn't feel much pain in watching it. It wasn't that touching. And I also don't know why.
I never felt that they were in college
Maybe because of cultural differences? But all these time, I felt like they were just in high school. In the Philippines, once you're in a big university, you'll barely interact with your seniors unless you joined their club, you took advance classes, or your senior had to retake another subject. But here, it can be seen that ALL seniors and juniors interact with each other which I found it a little bit odd.
Plus their activities were a bit of a high school thing. I don't know. Maybe it's really how college works there.
ConclusionsA Little Thing Called First Love (2019) made me remember all the good things of having a crush. This series made me want to go back to high school and feel the puppy love again. Being in a situation where everything is becoming serious, I guess it's really time to think about the fun things that happened before.
This drama is a very chill story. There's no intense drama. There may be problems but not to the point where you'll cry so hard. If you want to watch something that is not that heavy, I recommend this drama. It will just make you fall in love all over again.
