Why did you join PAC?

Just curious as to where other PAC members are coming from. Did you
join because you and your family have been affected by cancer? Did
you join because it's a cool idea? Did you join because you have some
specific direction you want for the co-op? Others?

Just curious!

For me, my mother died of cancer, I have a biology background and
currently working in oncology.

I'm of course interested in treatments, but I'm also very much looking
forward to seeing how a diverse membership will end up evolving PAC.

Hi Jason,

Great question.

I joined Pink Army soon after hearing about the idea from Andrew. The
idea really interested me, and when I did a bit more research on my
own, it became blindingly obvious that something like this needs to
come about.

Having recognized that current drug development model isn't cutting
it, for me it came down to:

1) Do nothing and hope things change for the better.
2) Take action and become involved.

When I thought about it like that, it was clear what I needed to do! I
think this is the direction drug development needs to, and will
eventually go. I think I have tangible skills to contribute to the
development and implementation of this idea, and I want to see it come
to fruition.

(My formal educational background is in Knowledge Engineering.)

Cheers,
Ali

I met Andrew at Singularity University, and was fascinated by his
ideas, and the concept of the co-op. Joining was a no-brainer for me,
and I am very excited to see the organization evolving.

Hi Jason,

It would be great to have a survey attached to the membership.  If people are ready to join the coop and commit their money, they'd probably why they're connecting.  Do you have any experience with this sort of data collection?  It should go out to the mail list and facebook pages.  There are still only a few people in the coop, but we're going to get a lot more soon, I think.

The field of genetics is inseparable from cancer so it was something I thought about all the time.  It struck home when my friend's wife was diagnosed and died from it.  Seeing the failure of the academic and corporate machine to produce effective, low-cost medicines at first disheartened me, then inspired me. The idea of pen source biotechnology changed my life in ways that I still can't believe or even fully understand.

Peter Diamandis, the CEO of the XPrize Foundation, says the best way to predict the future is to build it.  I totally get it.  No one knows where this will go because we're building it in real time.

Oh silly me, I just realized the join page does ask for referral
info. Where is that data going now?

Hi Andrew,

Unfortunately, my websavviness is is rudimentary at best (which is why
I haven't volunteered on any of the calls for web development). There
are of course online survey tools like SurveyMonkey. The only other
time I had done this was when I was trying to see who would come to a
destination wedding. It was done on a google site using google docs
to collect the data:

http://sites.google.com/site/erinandjasonsittinginatree/guest-list-2

This survey has become unlinked from it's google doc since then
though...

The other thing I would suggest is to have this question and a comment
box on the page where people sign up (we didn't end up having a
destination wedding). The response to "why did you join" is likely to
be a free-flow text anyway. Then you can also ask how'd they hear
about PAC, etc. Some of these comments could be quite inspirational
too, and excerpts can be run on a rotating ticker tape on the front
page!

As part of that, we can also have a frequent referral program,
anchored to people's membership number (I'm 66). So that in any given
month, the member to refer the most new members gets a PAC t-shirt and
the glory of spreading the word! A running referral scoreboard would
help the competitive spirit too. Again, my rudimentary web-fu has no
idea how to code this.

Sorry, getting off topic now but just seeing how we can get us from
176 to 2500 ASAP.

Hey Andrew, I have experience with building user registration like
this, and I think it is an absolutely bad idea to forward user
registration to a mailing list. I do, however, think that something
like a facebook/twitter-pinger that lets them autopost something like
"I joined Pink Army" (etc.) would be valuable, but I do not think
auto-public announcements going *into* our mailing list would be wise.

I suspect they would be willing to write down a quick note or two
while they have their credit card out, yes.

That's easy and doable, but it would require either myself or some
other web developer to have access to the current membership
database/list. Also, it would require a few changes to the
registration system so that a (hidden) referal variable can be sneaked
into the form. Then, members will be able to send out a distribution
link (like over twitter).

state of the art on registration dictates as few steps as humanly
possible between their arrival and the moment we get their cash...
therefore I recommend asking them all the fun questions AFTER we have
their credit card #
