RE: Neighborhood Streets Program Goes to Work on SW Pine Street

The voting is over and speed cushions will be coming soon to SW Pine
Street between SW 72nd Avenue and SW 80th Avenue. The program started
with a resident’s request in March of 2007. A neighborhood safety
campaign was conducted that included the radar trailer, small radar
reader board loaned to residents, lawn signs, door-hangers and traffic
studies. A traffic-calming plan was developed at a neighborhood
meeting in October of 2008. Petitions were circulated and over 51% of
the residents asked to continue with the program. In February, over
67% of the property owners returned their ballots with a yes vote and
the plan for 4 speed cushions with signs and pavement markings was
approved. The next steps will be to advertise the project in March of
2009 and select the qualified low bidding contractor in April. The
contractor will then provide bonding and insurance and sign a contract
with Washington County in May. After approval by the Board of County
Commissioners construction should begin in June of 2009, weather
permitting. Construction of asphalt speed cushions requires minimum
temperatures and dry pavement.

Thank you for your patience and a special thanks to everyone for their
help in getting the petition circulated, signed and submitted, and in
getting the ballots returned with the required percentage of
approval. If you have questions or comments about the Neighborhood
Streets Program, visit our website at www.co.washington.or.us/nsp or
