If you use Chrome, try Pinboard Tools (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pinboard-plus/mphdppdgoagghpmmhodmfajjlloijnbd). I don't feel like installing it though, while Pinboard bookmarklet is lightweight and sufficient enough. So to take advantage of Chrome's built-in star indicator, I import Pinboard exported HTML to Chrome manually every month.

I don't know how this could be implemented - but in terms of visual recognition, even just changing the color of the Pinboard toolbar icon would be sufficient - this is what "Pocket" does for instance - by changing the logo color (and being one-click bookmark to begin with.)  While the Pinboard 'Read Later' bookmarklet is good since it's one-click only, I do find the small box and the tiny delay as it adds the page somewhat distracting/inefficient, as 'Pocket' (which doesn't have the amazing Archiving features of Pinboard, hence doesn't suit me) is instant-add on one click without a bookmarklet.
