(forking this off as this is more a global discussion than the one feature request that prompted this post)

Maciej and Peter have been slammed as of late due to the huge influx of people wanting to just keep their current (yahoo) delicious.com status quo.  However the reason a lot of people opted for this awesome service and are loyal pinboard.in users is that we wanted to keep or regain our (pre-yahoo) del.icio.us functionality.  The lightweight-ness and carefully chosen (and well implemented) features are what makes it the perfect choice for a particular type of user.  If all the bloat and social and networking whatnot that yahoo kept piling on gets replicated here, then I imagine there will be a similar migration of those who just wanted simple and fast.

Pinboard.in isn't twitter, or facebook, or a blog for you to build your network, there are no points for having been 'first' on a link in the popular feed.  Its not the 'biggest collection of bookmarks in the universe' its a service for individuals to use. Its pretty clear from each site's taglines:

"Delicious is a Social Bookmarking service"
vs
"Pinboard is a bookmarking website for introverted people in a hurry. "

Not to put words in his mouth, but Maciej has made pretty clear where he wants things to go:

from pinboard.in/about

About

Pinboard is a bookmarking website for introverted people in a hurry.

The focus of the site is less on socializing, and more on speed and utility. The goals of the site, in order of priority, are:

  1. Never lose data
  2. Be ridiculously fast
  3. Offer useful features
So in closing, M&P if I'm off base, apologies, but I hope y'all can enjoy the recent bump in users and the success it may bring, but I also hope you can remain true to your ideals and original goals. Thanks again for a great service!

Hello everyone,

One of the useful features in delicious was the fact that you could
see any user's network (both mutual relationships and unilateral
'follows'). This Friend-of-a-Friend thing was the place where I found
a lot of cool people to follow.

What do you think?

I am in complete agreement with this. I became a Pinboard user because
of two things. The first was that it was being actively developed and
improved in a way that Delicious clearly wasn't, and the business
model appeared to make continued development a sustainable
proposition.

The second was the ethos: after Delicious' disastrous version 2 UI,
Pinboard's spare aesthetic was very welcome, and "antisocial
bookmarking"—focusing on making bookmarking work well for individual
users, rather than being a reddit-esque link aggregator—make it clear
that this was a service which would be useful for me, as an individual
wanting to store and catalogue web pages, rather than someone looking
for something new to read.

However, I am not particularly concerned that Maciej and Peter will
change their vision for Pinboard merely because a large influx of
former Delicious users clamour for a replica of all the features they
are used to. Pinboard's archiving service offers both a distinctive
feature and a revenue stream which should allow it to thrive. It
solves a problem I have had for a very long time, and I was very happy
to renew my subscription yesterday. Further investment in doing
bookmarking well rather than social media badly seems to me both a
better business model, and a more likely avenue for Pinboard (given
the fairly clear position Maciej has outlined) to pursue.

Benedict.

I second this statement. I switched to Pinboard specifically because it was billed as anti-social bookmarking. It is fast, does exactly what I need it to do and has a killer support and development team. I also hope that Pinboard stays true to its roots.

I don't understand the arguments being passed around this
conversation.

On the one hand, you stress the differences between pinboard and
delicious, only to state that pinboard thrives to be the mythical
delicious that existed pre-yahoo. Once you make up your mind about
this the conversation will be much clearer. I've been using delicious
since 2005, and it was social from the start.

The fact that delicious made some mistakes with the implementation of
some features has nothing to do with the features themselves, most of
which made the product more powerful & interesting.

Why are you so against the idea of making your bookmarks useful for
somebody *other* than yourself? It does not necessarily mean it will
render the product useless for your individual use.

Yes there was bloat in there, but let's not dismiss ideas just because
they come from people that used delicious extensively. We don't want
to come across as elitists, do we?

Thanks,
Dan

Also, i think this pinboard blog post can explain things best:
http://pinboard.in/blog/105/

"At the same time, I realize that not everyone is an information
hermit. I've been delighted to see Pinboard fill up with people
enthusiastic about plain old social bookmarking, who just want to see
it a little faster or better-integrated with other services. I welcome
these bright-eyed extroverts who wish to connect everything to
everything else, and will happily add all the features they ask for,
just as long as the silent majority of shy nerds can continue to feel
welcome on the site and benefit from its features."

So let me be the 'bright-eyed extrovert' :)
