No, I think URL shortening is a terrible thing for the Internet. If
anything, I'm working on de-shortening as much as I can within the
site.

This is an old thread, and you have shared your opinion, but I'd be curious to hear any more background into this opinion.

Recently I've been considering the combination of a bookmarking service (pinboard) with a URL shortener at a custom domain. So, for example: being able to share links from "links.my-custom-domain". Doing this, combined with the archival feature, would allow me:
  1. to avoid link rot situations (If the source has gone off-line, the cached content could be shown instead of redirecting, albeit unstyled)
  2. to help find interesting links for future reference or link "gardening" (Which links were clicked by others I have shared with? This may point to a more interesting page for me in the future. Which links did I click on myself? If I visited a link several times, it also may point to more valuable content.)
I see these as upsides to link shortening. Provided custom domain support was part of the solution, it would allow a user's links to function even beyond the existence of Pinboard itself, which I think is a good thing for the Internet.

Thoughts?

That would make pinboard a killer option, only one site to register and manage content.

Also would it be possible to add some zotero features?
