It's quite memory hungry, yes, but you still should be able to limit its appetite by adjusting request and temporary pools size:

Also using jemalloc/hoard memory allocators helps A LOT since the default memory allocator in Linux seems quite ineffective comparing to them.
That said, 512Mb is.. well.. not enough for any kind of task I can think of, so you surely need to add some more.
