Curious what you guys think of this. I mainly deal with non-shopping
cart web apps like http://stopthespin.com/ but maybe this would be
something that would really set Pinax apart? Even if there was a
shopping app that just worked with PayPal I bet it would generate a
lot of interest, and allow for website production like etsy very
easily.

Hi Tom,

Pinax is already set apart as it is the pre-eminent Django solution for building Social Networking applications.

If you want credit card integration, I would suggest integrating Satchmo (http://www.satchmoproject.com/) or other similiar Django business efforts into your Pinax effort.

So Django/Pinax is arguably not missing what this article is mentioning. What is arguably missing is easy-to-find documention that lists credit card solutions that work in Django and Pinax.

Hope that helps!

I would say that credit card integration and a shopping cart are good enhancements for the future of Pinax.  Implementing Satchmo and Pinax in parallel would not be ideal - although it's the only solution aside from trying to roll your own credit card app as far as I can tell.

I'm surprised how few Django credit card apps I could find - and how there seem to be none that are mature.

If somebody loves of one, I'd love to know more about it.

We have discussed having an out of the box solution to dealing with
subscriptions. A new app has come about namely named django-paypal. It
is best solved there than reinventing the wheel. I don't see an issue
with Pinax using some sort of credit card processing solution written
in Python.

I however, strongly disagree here. Web frameworks are not only
targeted for e-commerce or sites that need to deal with credit card
processing. This sort of thing is best handled by third-party tools
that abstract and/or reduce duplication and complexity of this sort of
thing. The Ruby community already has ActiveMerchant which I think is
absolutely excellent. These sort of things emerge from e-commerce
platforms because they have that specific need. I don't see any reason
why the Python community can't have the same tool. I disagree this is
something that a web framework should provide. I am not arguing that
it should be provided as an add-on and reduce the complexity involved.
It is far to domain specific and web framework developers need to
focus on more core features than spending time perfecting the best
credit card processing solution.
