Unicode issue in notification app

Getting this error:
"You must not use 8-bit bytestrings unless you use a text_factory that
can interpret 8-bit bytestrings (like text_factory = str). It is
highly recommended that you instead just switch your application to
Unicode strings."
when trying to send notification with special characters in it. I
guess it can be easily fixed, but do not know where. Anyone else got
this issue?
Using Pinax 0.9a1
