Irecommend going for the All-Access Pass which costs less than two classes combined and gains you access to all 14 of the classes on writing (such as Neil Gaiman, Shonda Rhimes, Aaron Sorkin, James Patterson, and Dan Brown), as well as every other class in the MasterClass catalog.

There are so many ways to learn to write fiction. As one begins the benefit of structured courses, seems to me, is that it saves time. I also found the plot patterns of genre fiction a helpful safety net under the high wire.

Within the writing community, a lot of snark gets directed at just about anything Patterson does, but seriously, when the guy who sells more books than ANYBODY talks about writing, I for one am interested in what he has to say.

BTW: I just attended CraftFest in NY, and listened to presentations by our fellow WU contributors James Scott Bell and Donald Maass, and they were two of the most enlightening hours of informative guidance I have ever had. (I took a LOT of notes.)

Thanks for this post, Sophie. Like others, I wondered about the content behind the marketing tidal wave for this course. Your evaluation answers all of my questions! I especially like the way you looked at it from the POV of an aspiring writer and an experienced writer.

Exactly the kind of review I was hoping to find. My son and I write and self-publish (not P.O.D.!) a series of chapter books that to date have sold more than 120,000 copies. I was particularly interested in the lesson on working with a co-author and your analysis of that segment has helped me make my decision about the course. Thank you.

I am signing up now for the master class. Writing is a side hobby of mine as I always thought I could write an amazing book due to my imagination. I believe investing in yourself through paid training is the best method to get ahead. $90 is not much to ask to be in front of a hugely successful author offering you his advice.

I am contemplating it, but I am too busy writing at the moment. Thank you, Sophie, for this balanced review. I am not sold on classes of any kind making a writer better. I think that reading and writing a lot makes writers better.

Our alumni have gone on to become game writers or narrative designers at Bad Robot Games, Blizzard, Cloud Chamber, Crimson Herring, Deck Nine, Deviation Games, EA, Firaxis, HakJak, High Moon Studios, Jam City, Kluge Interactive, Massive Games, Monumental, NetEase, Obsidian, Spooky Doorway, Squid Games, System Era Softworks, Telltale, Tencent, Undead Labs, Wizards of the Coast, and ZeniMax. And the list keeps growing.

"I just loved knowing that the class was coming every week, knowing that I had these people who I could always reach out to on Slack, even if we didn't talk all the time. Just knowing that they were there created that structure and that rising creative tide in me that motivated me to do good work in the class."

"If you decide to embark on this short, but long-lasting journey, I can promise you that it'll provide you with all the tools needed to build up your confidence, to build up your skills, and to make sure that you're headed where you need to be."

"In a world that's just so plagued by hyper-individualism and cutthroat competitiveness, Susan just somehow managed to find the kindest, most engaging, talented range of people from all around the world. This is a class that will make you feel like you found your people. These are people who will inspire you, lift you up, and make you feel like you're not alone in this. And many of them feel like they've become lifelong friends."

"I think if you're really committed to writing, if you really want to discover what goes into the craft of game writing, just go ahead and do it. It's really, you know, a cornucopia of knowledge and emotion and friendship."

So the first half of the course is extremely motivating from a man who has been there, done that. The second half is where I learned more practical advice (like the outline) that made the course even more worth it.

This is also great advice for self-publishers to remember when crafting those blurbs for Amazon. The reader is going to be investing their time (typically more valuable than money for most avid readers) in you so show them why they should invest in you.

You can tell why James is so popular. You can also tell he worked in advertising. He is full of pithy quotes about writing. He sprinkles these constantly throughout the course. Here are a few that spoke to me:

In a single day she gave us an enormous amount of advice about writing including methods for fighting procrastination and perfectionism. Her enthusiasm for her craft is contagious and I would highly recommend her Masterclass to any budding writers.

The Masterclass in Creative Writing is designed for students of demonstrated exceptional ability and commitment. Students enrolled in the Masterclass in Creative Writing will spend a semester working closely with a creative writing faculty mentor on a cohesive collection of poems, short stories, essays or a two-act play, screenplay or novella, totaling between 70-90 pages, depending on the genre. At the end of the semester, students will give a reading to the public and also have a formal defense with 3 creative writing faculty (their mentor, the Director of the Creative Writing Program, plus 1-2 other creative writing faculty members); this defense will focus on the student's artistic manifesto, an argument for an aesthetic, and writing process. Interested students must complete an application proposal (guidelines are available from the Director of Creative Writing), which requires the signatures of both the creative writing faculty mentor and Director of the Creative Writing Program. This course is only open to Creative Writing and Journaslim Minor students. It is only offered during the Spring semester. Pre-requisites: minimum of 6 creative writing classes, one of which is Reading for Writers: Aesthetic Theory and another is an independent study where the shape and scope of the Masterclass in Creative Writing is first explored. For more information, please contact the Program Director, Dawn Lonsinger.

Are you considering taking Neil Gaiman's MasterClass? Neil Gaiman is a brilliant author, and expert-led MasterClasses are known for being informative and inspiring. If you're wondering whether Neil Gaiman's class is right for you, read on for my Neil Gaiman MasterClass review.

Before we get started though, I wasn't paid to write this review, but I do want to be fully transparent and let you know that the links below are affiliate links. If you sign up for MasterClass, it will help me be able to keep writing (and help me continue sharing what I've learned about the writing process). Of course, this won't affect your overall price, and it didn't affect my decision on the course.

Personally, when this course was first released, I was wondering whether I would ever write another page. Family emergencies, extensive travel, and other shenanigans stole my inspiration, took up all my time, and left me gnawed down to the bone.

I'm a published author of four books and over fifty short stories. But in the weeks leading up to this course, I couldn't write. I couldn't even dream. The day before I signed up for the class, I freaked out. In fact, I actually said these words to myself: Maybe I'll never write again. Then, Neil Gaiman's MasterClass was released.

If you haven't taken an online writing class from MasterClass before, here's what it comes with: you're getting a semester's worth of teaching and homework in one intense day of classes, followed by personal feedback and instruction.

In this particular case, there are nineteen videos totaling approximately five hours and numerous workbook exercises with tips and homework assignments in PDF format. The downloads contain a chunk of text from the lesson, titles of resources for further reading, and truly intense homework assignments. Here's a run down of all that's included.

The class is full of Gaiman telling stories about his own writing experience. I've always found a good story told honestly sucks you in, rings your emotions like a sympathetic tuning fork, and reminds you why you love to write your own stories.

Writers can learn a lot from writing short stories, especially how to make the most out of a story's description. Neil teaches how to get the most out of words and details by concentrating on tight scenes.

Most of the lessons come with some kind of homework exercise, and I found these to be especially helpful. I'll devote a whole section below to talk about the exercises. Each of these can inspire you to write beautiful stories.

Fair warning: The homework will take you many hours, but it's okay because it's the perfect homework, concrete steps to apply the magic we've learned, giving solid, simple assignments to deepen our craft, and they made me cry, laugh, and write furiously.

In one of my favorite assignments, Gaiman asked us to take a fairy-tale character and plop them down in a therapist's office. I succeeded, and I love what came out. I don't really know who Dr. Ranier Blood is, but he's not leaving my roster any time soon.
