when there are insufficient affordances & tools to manage it for regular humans. which quite frankly is an awful lot of stuff in my programming life.

eg right now i'd probably rather have a monorepo of this stuff i have to learn up on for work,  so i could at least even just grep more easily because yes all too often that kind of lameness is what one has to fall back on. 

 a subset of the "all abstractions leak" rule.
