why enums suck

all the various ways of suck exhibited by all the different kinds of enums

i suspect are really hinting at indictment of any and all modeling we try to do in software

has there ever been a really good solution to the fundamental "commonality vs. variability" issue? including both the logical robustness, and the develop experience?
