It's real. Fil-C is garbage-collected C with special attention to unsafe behavior. In case of use-after-free, the freed memory is not recycled until GC'd, and attempts to use it will abort.

There is some overhead for these features. Larger allocations on malloc, read barriers, write barriers, etc.. Up to 4x performance overhead, usually 1.5-2x.
