Academy-Sherman Park: Rebuilding Stronger, Cleaner, and Together  


    The spirit of Academy-Sherman Park was on full display this past Saturday, March 14th. In a massive show of community strength, 80+ volunteers rolled up their sleeves for our 314 Neighborhood Cleanup Day. The results were staggering: we cleared 275 tires in January and 675 tires from the Hodiamont Tracks and surrounding alleys on Saturday. These totals do not include over 100 bags of trash collected from our neighborhood.

     This incredible effort wouldn't have been possible without the support of the EPA, The Greenway Network, The Honorable Shameen Clark-Hubbard, NSO Keith Minor,  Office of the Mayor, Academy residents and stakeholders. And of course, a huge thank you to our Federation of Block Unit 323-A (5100 Cabanne), whose home-cooked meals kept our spirits high and our stomachs full.

     However, as we continue to rebuild from the May 16th tornado, we face a persistent challenge: illegal dumping. Our hard work is being undercut by those who see our neighborhood as a wasteland. We’ve proven we can clean it up—now it’s time to keep it that way.

Call to Action: Protect Our Streets

We are calling on every resident to become a guardian of our neighborhood. Here is how you can help:

• See Something, Say Something: If you witness illegal dumping, do not confront the individual. Note the license plate and vehicle description and call the Citizens’ Service Bureau at (314) 622-4800.

• Secure Your Perimeter: If you live near a vacant lot or alley, consider installing motion-sensor lights or a security camera. Visibility is the best deterrent.

• Spread the Word: Remind contractors and neighbors that the city's North Transfer Station (4124 N. 1st St) is the proper place for bulk waste and tires.

• Join the "Alley Watch": Connect with your Block Unit leader to help monitor "hot spots" where dumping frequently occurs.


    We have come too far since the tornado to let trash define our future. Let’s keep Academy-Sherman Park a place we are all proud to call home!
