At the George bar he ordered ‘Four Alexandra [sic] cocktails please,’ ranged them before him with a loud “Yum-yum’ which drew every eye, outraged, upon him. ‘I expect you would prefer sherry, but, my dear Charles, you are not going to have sherry. Isn’t this a delicious concoction? You don’t like it? Then, I will drink it for you. One, two, three, four, down the red lane they go. How the students stare!’…

Embury, ever the evangelist for strong, dry cocktails grumbles that the drink “can be consumed with reasonable safety before a meal, although why anyone should take it if dry cocktails are available, I wouldn’t know.”

For something more layered, I strongly recommend Pierre Ferrand 1840, an incredibly versatile bottle of cognac with layers of ripe fruit and subtle spices. At $45 or so for a bottle, it’s more expensive, but it’s very much an improvement in this and other brandy/cognac cocktails.

Recently, I have been seeing Spanish style Gin & Tonics pop up on menus and they have changed the G&T game for me! England can take credit for the creation of the original, but the Spanish used their sense for flair to make this classic drink really shine! Along with the junipery gin and sweet, botanical tonic, other ingredients are added to impart not only subtle flavors to them, but add a beautiful garnish to the otherwise simple drink. I mean, damn how gorgeous are these cocktails?!

It's a lot easier than making a bunch of cocktails yourself. Especially when you're busy hosting a barbecue, watching nine straight hours of football, attending to your campfire or enjoying a labor-less Labor Day.

We ordered takeout from Crave during our Isle of Palms vacation. They were super attentive to a food allergy in our party which I appreciate! We had cocktails at the bar while waiting and it is a great atmosphere with friendly and attentive staff.

I had a quiet birthday with a friend, we are both in the wine biz, but she didn't want alcohol on an empty stomach. So we made a pizza from scratch & while it was cooking we whipped up some fancy-looking cocktails with the Lacewing & Tandem. They were very satisfying & with a complex taste/texture. I liked how they turned out so much that I replicated them at a group birthday party & served them as a welcome cocktail. Several of my friends said "I feel like I'm drinking a regular cocktail, this is great!" I throw a lot of parties, & I'm going to make Tandem the starter drink at all of them. No more alcohol on an empty stomach!

The thing I love about Tilden's non-alcoholic cocktails is that they feel like a true cocktail experience, rather than just a juice or soda. The depth of flavors is impressive, and it's clear that they put a lot of thought into crafting these drinks. Lacewing has a refreshing and zesty taste. Tandem, on the other hand, has a cozy, smoky feel. I highly recommend giving Tilden Cocktails a try if you're looking for an alcohol-free alternative that still feels fancy :).
