Booting refers to the action of starting a computer: desktop, laptop, and tablet. Two common ways to boot a device are pressing a button (button combinations) and executing commands through certain tools. In short, booting is the process to prepare your device ready for use.

Boot menu is a menu you could access before entering an operating system. Each time when you start your computer, you can choose to access boot menu or not. You can load up other operating systems (or applications) manually by accessing boot menu and making changes.

MiniTool Power Data Recovery is a powerful recovery tool to help you recover files from a working computer or from a PC that cannot start. You can download the Trial edition to experience its performance. But if you want to create bootable USB drive or CD/DVD, the snap-in WinPE Bootable Builder included in advanced editions is necessary. (Click to see the edition comparison.)

I have a new Pavilion 15-N297SA coming this week and what i like to do before i boot the machine into windows for the first time is put my cloning software into the DVD drive and turn the laptop on and press a certain key to bring up boot option, you boot from hard drive/dvd drive/usb/external hdd etc etc, then take an image of ALL partitions including hidden and recovery options so just in case something goes wrong i have that to fall back on.

Tap the Esc key which will bring up a menu.

From there tap F9 Boot Options.

However on most Windows 8 machines Secure Boot will have to be disabled & Legacy boot enabled in BIOS to allow booting from a CD/DVD.

That will be F10 from the menu after Esc.

All computer users know how to boot up their computers, however, very few of them know the boot menu and how to access it on their computers. Here, we'll take the HP boot menu and HP boot menu key as an example to show everything that you need to know about it.

Are you looking for a brief guide to tell you how to access the HP boot menu and how to make use of the HP boot menu key? Stay here. On this page, we'll show you how to access your HP laptop or desktop boot menu and use it to configure your computer successfully. It applies to all levels of HP computer or laptop users. Let's get started.

Normally, when you press the power button to boot up a computer, the boot menu will not show up. Boot Menu is an approach that appears before you enter the operating system by pressing the boot menu keys.

The Boot Device Options, F9, is known for BIOS boot resources for UEFI including Windows Boot Manager, Network Card. And it also includes Legacy Boot Source like DVD, hard drive, CD, and USB flash drive.

In a word, stop using your computer immediately once you lost files using the HP boot menu key on Windows 10 for restoring or resetting the OS. And turn to reliable EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard for help.

You can also use the manual repair and data recovery services of EaseUS to perform system repair and recovery. The professional technical team can help you solve any system startup errors, including system failure, system blue screen, system black screen, and so on.

If your computer is currently unbootable or dead, you can turn to bootable data recovery software for help. Here, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard can help. It allows you to create a bootable media and boot HP from its boot menu to fully scan and restore all valuable hard disk files.

Connect the bootable disk to the PC that won't boot and change your computer boot sequence in BIOS. For most users, it works well when they restart their computer and press F2 simultaneously to enter BIOS.

On this page, we introduced what the HP boot menu is and how to access the HP boot menu effectively. According to the HP boot menu keys, you can check device information, run a hardware diagnostic, change boot order, run HP from USB, and even run HP from a Network drive.

Updated Description: I'm struggling with getting a dual-boot HP Pavilion to boot directly into Grub. I've set up several dual-boot systems in the past wthout difficulty, but this one seems to be different. The only difference I'm aware of is that in the past I've either worked with a preinstalled Windows or wiped the disk entirely before proceeding, This time I wiped the preinstalled Windows and then installed Kubuntu, thinking I didn't really need Windows on this machine at all. I later changed my mind and installed Kubuntu; I didn't remove the old HP recovery partition or the EFI partion.

This menu does not offer any way to change the order of the items. I can get into Grub from here, but that's an unsatisfactory solution since it requires intervention on every reboot. Unsurprisingly, the boot options in the BIOS Setup specify only devices and provide no way of selecting a particular partition. Those options are:

So far my attempts to do grub-install /dev/sda have no effect on this behavior, and the fact that the Boot Options Menu already contains Ubuntu suggests that grub-install by itself is not sufficient. Boot-Repair does not help.

I've tried two different remedies, one Linux-based and one Windows-based. Under Linux Ive used efibootmanager to reorder the boot sequence. It seems to do the right thing, but the effect is lost on rebooting. In Windows I've used bcdedit, which again seemed to work but didn't survive a reboot.

Further Update: I solved my problem by repartitioning the disk to clean it, then installing Windows followed by Kubuntu. I now boot directly into Kubuntu, with a menu item taking me to Windows so I never need the Boot Options menu ( brought up by F9). But out of curiosity I brought it up anyway, with an interesting result:

I used Macrium Reflect to make a backup of my HP Pavilion laptop. Macrium Reflect uses a USB stick which is set up to boot the computer when there is a need to install the backup. I thought I had told the computer to boot from the USB stick if one is inserted, but the laptop always boots the normal way.

a suggestion for OP to look up the HP pavilion laptop model on the HP computer support site, then look for the Manuals section and click on the user guide link and read the section for entering bios setup

Actually, on the HP Pavilion laptop, the trick to get to the BIOS is to start the booting process and rapidly keep pressing the ESC key. It takes you right to the BIOS, where you can specify the boot sequence.

My problem was RESOLVED. To get to the BIOS on an HP Pavilion laptop, keep pressing ESC quickly when the boot process starts. That takes you right to the BIOS, where you can alter and save the boot sequence.

I have a brand new HP Pavillion G series laptop, which is running Windows 7. I need to boot into the BIOS, to change the boot order, so I can boot the laptop with a recently installed Norton Ghost recovery CD.

At the login screen click the power icon with your mouse to bring up the 3 choices hover over restart, now hold shift, control, alt and use your last finger to press the left mouse button selecting restart. Hold the 3buttons still for about 5 seconds then let go....it will pull up the hidden menu options that allow you to do different things including factory reset but there's an option to change uefi startup option in bios...easiest and more options in this hidden menu...saved my Ardmore than once. Good luck

Hello, my laptop is HP 17-by3xx. To reinstall Windows 10 from scratch, try to boot from Windows 10 bootable USB thumb drive to no avail. BIOS UEFI boot order is set to have USB Flash Drive as first in the list, but it still boots into Windows.

If I try Shift+Restart from within Windows -> Use Device -> USB Drive (UEFI), I get the selected boot device failed. Never dealt with HP (we are a Dell shop), so I am stuck on how to boot from the thumb drive this HP that was mistakenly purchased by our staff.

The installation CD/DVD is the most traditional media we are used to starting a laptop, and accessing the recovery environment, and in it, you can repair your computer with different troubleshooting tools or start a Windows installation. Also, some users may create a portable version of Windows in it for easy access.

But now, the new laptop hardly includes this old media, so you can only use USB to boot from an HP laptop or desktop. It still helps you in these aspects as long as you put the recovery image or Windows installation into your USB drive.

The HP boot menu key is a key to access the boot menu in an HP laptop or desktop, and you can change BIOS boot order, diagnose system, boot from USB or recovery drive, and repair system errors with the following options in the boot menu:

In fact, this may be caused by many reasons, such as disk connection issues, driver issues, wrong boot order, outdated BIOS, etc. And based on the possible reasons, you can fix it with corresponding solutions.

If your computers have both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, it may be a driver issue. Because most BIOS systems support USB 2.0 drivers but you can only get the USB 3.0 drivers after loading the operating system. In this case, you need to configure the USB 3.0 to auto.
