Theprocess for making slip is fairly simple. If you can successfully follow a baking recipe, you can make your own casting slip. The key is to make sure you have all of your ingredients on hand, measure carefully, and add them in the proper order.
Step 4
Let the slip stand overnight (or continue mixing overnight if you have the equipment to do so). Mix once again the next day and recheck the specific gravity before using. It is possible to use the slip right away, but waiting insures that all of the particles are thoroughly wet.

Dr. Chanda is a board certified internist who has more than 15 years of experience in both primary care and hospital medicine. She had been a hospitalist at Inova Loudoun Hospital for the last 6 years where she enjoyed treating the various complicated and challenging patients she encountered. However, she wanted to provide a continuity of care to her patients even after they had left the hospital. Therefore she decided to open up her primary care practice where she is dedicated to providing compassionate and comprehensive care to the patients both in the office and the hospital setting. Dr. Chanda believes in taking the time to carefully listen to her patients concerns and developing an individualized plan for them to achieve optimum health and wellbeing. She has a special interest in women's health, preventive health and wellness.
Dr. Chanda completed her Internal medicine residency from Abington Memorial Hospital (affiliated with Temple University Hospital) in Pennsylvania. During her residency she was the recipient of multiple awards including the Eleanor Dixon Award for best original research. She did her medical schooling from King George's Medical School from Lucknow in India where she graduated at the top of her class. She is board certified in Internal medicine. She is a member of American College of Physicians and Society of Hospital Medicine.
My project involves the development of robust cathode materials for sodium and lithium-air batteries. The goal of my research is to understand the effect of glyme-ether electrolyte length on the expected mechanism (solution vs. surface mediated) on battery performance. The ultimate goal of this project is to develop an affordable energy storage device which will help tackle the climate crisis that the earth is facing today.
I am gaining hands-on experience in the lab. Working on assembling sodium oxide battery cells in a glove box environment, which is quite exciting. This will help with my future classes and internships.
My work is in a delicate and sophisticated environment. There is no room for error or cross contamination. I have to be extra careful while setting up the experiments. Mentoring by PhD candidate Kunal Velinkar in the Nikolla Lab benefits me tremendously in developing my experimental skills.
The laboratory setting has allowed me to gain proficiency in multiple methods of chemical characterization. I also gained experience in conducting literature searches and reviews. These skills will help me pursue a career in research either as a doctoral student or in the research and development segment in an industry.
Chanda plans on completing his internship with SURE at the end of July and is excited to take away practical knowledge involving chemical engineering that he can use in future positions and the remainder of his coursework.

In parallel to our science programs you have been reading about, there have been many untold stories about the operation of the R/V Revelle. It is clear that this VERTIGO cruise would not have been such a success without the experience and dedication of Captain Dave Murline and his entire crew. We are also indebted to the Ocean Sciences Division at the U.S. National Science Foundation who have supported this VERTIGO project and our time on the R/V Revelle, as well as the many other Agencies, including the U.S. Department of Energy and international funding sources that supported additional groups from around the world to participate in this project.
When we return to shore, our job is to conduct careful analyses of our samples, looking for biological, chemical and physical clues to solve our carbon flux puzzle. Our job for the next couple of days, is to pack up, clean up and ship out equipment and these precious samples to the many labs around the world that are part of the VERTIGO project. At the moment, everyone is anxious to contact family, friends and colleagues as we hit shore.
There is an increasing demand in higher education institutions for training in complex environmental problems. Such training requires a careful mix of conventional methods and innovative solutions, a task not always easy to accomplish. In this paper we review literature on this theme, highlight relevant advances in the pedagogical literature, and report on some examples resulting from our recent efforts to teach complex environmental issues. The examples range from full credit courses in sustainable development and research methods to project-based and in-class activity units. A consensus from the literature is that lectures are not sufficient to fully engage students in these issues. A conclusion from the review of examples is that problem-based and project-based, e.g., through case studies, experiential learning opportunities, or real-world applications, learning offers much promise. This could greatly be facilitated by online hubs through which teachers, students, and other members of the practitioner and academic community share experiences in teaching and research, the way that we have done here.
