Happy to get an intro letter from Oscar about starting a newsletter for PiDP owners. In it he notes there has been an update to the PiDP-8 software. What is the best or proper way to update the software?
BTW, I'm using a Model 4 Pi.

I noticed a link to the tangentsoft site (below) about updating PiDP-8. Do I understand correctly that I would need to manually compile? I originally install the PiDP-8 almost 5 years ago, so is there really any advantage to updating?

Looks like you can choose already compiled or do it yourself.  I too have a very old image.  Probably 3 or 4 years when I created it.  It runs, so I don't worry about updating it.

Apologies. We haven't cut a release in a long time.  Indeed a binary distribution doesn't have the recent changes to support Pi 4 and Pi 5.  Those changes only got fully tested and accepted last month, after many months of false starts.

I've been hoping we could come to closure on the Cycle Accurate addition before cutting a release.

Also, if you are in a hurry, follow this:

You should still visit the Tangentsoft site for all the info, but those few lines get things installed along the path of least resistance. For new builders (there's still 1-2 dozen or so every month!) having the Quick Install instructions proved useful.

Yes, there's a newsletter I wrote two weeks ago. I'm emailing it to all PiDP kit builders. But Gmail limits me to 400 emails a day. And I absolutely did not want to use MailChimp or creepy mass mailing tools like that. Certainly not now I've looked into how they snoop around. So it takes another week or so before I'm finished mailing it around the Old Fashioned Way :-)

Kind regards,

Oscar.

I decided to use the full OS/PiDP8 image. After booting, however, the lights are all working, but there is no output to my monitor.
GRRRRR

In the end I decided to compile on my working machine. However, although the command line prompt for pidp8 works fine, there are no lights working on the board now. So maybe I will just download the full OS with PiDP8, although I'll have to take it all apart.

You don't need to compile, but you could very easily. The best way to install is to use the latest version of Pi OS and the binary package. If you don't want to install Pi OS, you can use the PiDP/8 image and burn that directly to an SD card.

But compiling is also very simple, if you follow the instructions in that site.

The benefits of upgrading are a better incandescent light simulator for more realistic bulbs and several fixes/inprovements in the new Simh simulator. If you compile from source, you can also add the Deeper Thought blinkenlight demo with the new ILS.

Either download the multicore image from here (https://tangentsoft.com/pidp8i/wiki?name=Home), or install the latest version of Pi OS and the binary version available there. If you want, you can also install the sources, cloning that repo.

The latest version with the incandescent light simulator is quite nice.

I hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. As you'll see Flavio helped me a lot. In the end I burned the OS/PiDP image to the SD Card and all is well.

Oscar, you did send me your newsletter, so I guess I was one of the lucky firsts!
BTW, I want to let you know that instead of something like MailChimp, maybe look into NuevoMailer (nuevomailer.com). It's self hosted!!!! It was HIGHLY recommended by Steve Gibson of GRC.COM.
And one last note, Oscar. I've found a few links in various places on your site(s) that point to something completely different. But I figure you probably already know about them and I'd rather you just do the great stuff you're doing instead of worry about some stupid links. Should I point them out, though?

Can't wait for PiDP-1!!!!!!
