Speed of "terminal" when using HDMI on RPi

I am using the simplest setup with a keyboard and HDMI monitor plugged directly into the Raspberry Pi. 

So, is there a way for the (HDMI monitor) terminal display to update like it would on a Telnet connection, rather than almost-instant? It would add to the feeling of authenticity. Something like 2400-9600 BAUD would be scrumptious.
