I tried using the GRIPE program and I have no idea how it works, but this put a GRIPE file on my disk that I can't seem to get rid of, even using PUTR.

Does anyone know how to get rid of it, and/or how to actually do anything with this program?

Search for "GRIPE".  (Page A-4).

Running the program initializes by writing that GRIPE file.
A user can leave a message for the operator with "R GRIPE" and types a message.
The operator logs into account 3 and uses "R GRIPE" to read and manage the gripes.

Well, I figured out how the GRIPE program worked and all, but I still wanted to get rid of that GRIPE file... and yesterday I hit upon the most ridiculously easy solution.

I ran the PUTR program, then did DEL ?GRIPE

Easy peasy, mac and cheesy.

Yeah, I could have left it, but back in the day I never had a GRIPE file since either our early version of TSS8 didn't have it, or nobody ever used it.  So seeing that there bugged me.  You could say I have CDO.  (That's when you have OCD so bad you have to put the letters in alphabetical order...)

I think Gripe came about in 8.24?  Our system ran 8.22b for most of my time there.  About a month before I graduated (2 year local college) they moved up to 8.24.  They did not allow "talk" between all users.  Only between K00 and all other TTYs.
All other TTYs could only talk to K00.  We had to patch that over from 8.22b.  Guess they did not want users talking to each other.  I never used Gripe as I never knew about it at the time.
