Hello,

in 1983 I was given an 11/70 with two RP02 washing machines to run McDonnell-Douglas  Unigraphics. Loved it!

I always wondered about RSX11M. I figured out how to do a backup using PIP and that was about all I knew. I had a huge fight with DEC maintenance when they informed me they were removing the front panel.

My PiDP-11 went together smoothly. It works almost correctly. There is just a small problem. Apparently the rotary encoders on the latest batch are from a different source. The direction of rotation signal is reversed. The result is that the two LED arrays 'rotate' backwards. Any ideas? Functions are as expected, just a UI issue.

Welcome!

This has been a long standing software bug as far as I know.

There is/was a patch at some point that addressed this... But it regressed a few times.

I had/have that same problem.  Never got back to solve it.  I believe Oscar posted something about this.  It was not a big enough issue to worry about and I moved to other things.  I also managed to fry an internal trace (I believe my iron's tip was a higher temp tip than should have been used) so a few non important LEDs don't work.

The problem is that the rotary encoders apparently exists in two
variants, and we have never been able to tell which variant one is. And
depending on variant, the sw needs to decode it one way or the other,
and the wrong way means it's interpreted as rotating in the wrong direction.

So for now the only solution is to correct the software to decode it the
right way for your specific encoders.

Hi Larry,

Welcome to the group!

I had the same issue with my knobs and found a note about what to change to fix it:

In the file: /opt/pidp11/src/11_pidp_server/pidp11/gpio.c

Line 417 in my file:
                        //knobValue[i]++;       //bugfix 20181225
                        knobValue[i]--; //reverse direction

Line 426 in my file after the above change:
                        //knobValue[i]--;       // bugfix 20181225
                        knobValue[i]++; //reverse direction

Then from the /opt/pidp11/src directory, run makeserver.sh to compile a new binary.

Note that you may have to install some packages to be able to build on your Pi, if you haven't already.
You will need build-essential at least.
