Hello!
I've enabled the network feature in 2.11BSD and now want to establish an FTP connection with my Windows system and FileZilla. Unfortunately, I'm only getting error messages! How do I establish a connection correctly?
So far, I've started FTP in 2.11BSD with "FTP -N" and then tried to establish a connection with FileZilla to my 2.11BSD/FTP.
What am I doing wrong?
Does FileZilla or 2.11BSD/FTP require any additional settings?

I assume you mean "ftp -n" (small letters).

Anyway, you've completely misunderstood how things work. ftp is a
*client*. You use that to establish a ftp connection *from* your 2.11BSD
system, not to it.

The server is ftpd, and it should be already be enabled in
/etc/inetd.conf. However, if you haven't gone into multi-user mode, no
daemons have started yet, so that's the first thing I'd like you to
confirm you've done.

So:
1. Multi-user mode
2. Check inetd.conf that ftp have been enabled there

If those two steps have been done, then my next question would be if
you've verified that the network works at all. Can you ping some
external host from your 2.11BSD system, for example?

Hello Johnny!
Thank you for your quick answer!
I'm in multi-user mode of 2.11BSD and I can ping to google.com or my own windows-internet-address.
In inetd.conf i can see ftp with following items:
ftp    stream   tcp   nowait   root   /usr/libexec/tcpd   ftpd -1
I think this means ftp is enabled and working.
Now: how to establish a connection to my windows-system???

You start your ftp client on your windows machine, and you connect to
your 2.11BSD system.

If you want to initiate the ftp session from the 2.11BSD side, then you
need to have an ftp server running on your windows machine. That is
beyond my expertise to comment on how to do. :-)

Do you know what patch level your 2.11BSD system is on? Because we only
got passive mode implemented a little while ago, and if you have some
bad ftp client on the windows side, it might not deal with active mode.
Also, make sure you don't have some windows firewall thing blocking ftp
from working.

Finally - are you running your 2.11BSD system under simh on the same
machine as you are trying to connect using ftp?

One simple thing to check is doing:

netstat -a

You should see a line like:

tcp 0 0 *.ftp *.* LISTEN

in there. If you don't, then things are not up and running as they should.

I am running simh/2.11BSD on my windows10-system. opening ftp from 2.11BSd and ftp-windows or Filezilla or WinSCP allways give the message "access denied"
where can i see my patch-level?

and yes, with netstat -a I can see " tcp 0 0 *.ftp *.* LISTEN"

Are you sure winscp and filezilla are running on ftp mode and not on sftp mode? You want plain active or passive mode ftp (on ports 20/21), not sftp on port 22 or ftps (on port 443).

For me, access denied is usually because the connection can't be
established.
Which either is because a firewall is blocking the connection, you are
connecting somewhere else than ftp (see Flavio's comment), or you don't
have network connectivity between the machines.

It would be nice to see a dump of the actual output maybe.

Also, if you have some configuration, and you've given username/password
information, make sure it's correct.

Finally, if this really is connecting from the Windows-machine where
also the simh instance is running, there can be problems with talking
between those two specific hosts. Sometimes there are just a bit of a
problem with that specific connectivity.

As for checking patch level, see /VERSION (it's a file)

What user account are you using to try to.log in? You can't use root with the default setup, it needs to be your personal account.

Good point. And "access denied" actually do suggest more that it would
be an account problem, and not a connection problem.

Those are all great tips!

One more idea, did you configure your BSD instance to have an IP address in your network or did you configure simh to do NAT? The former is the only way that the FTP server would work; if the latter, you need to add a port forward in simh to present that FTP port on the host computer.

A simple test would be to use telnet and try to connect to the BSD machine on port 21. If you get "connected", the problem is the account. If it's unable to connect (you either get "denied" or just hangs), the problem is that the port is not exposed or blocked by a firewall.

Best,

Flavio Villanustre

Hi Flavio!

Telnet is working well!
But I tried FTP with the root-user!
I will add a new user and try it again.

There is a user "user" already added. Just configure a password for it if you wish and you should be good to go.

I think you should be able to use any account that is not in /etc/ftpusers, and that has a password.
