BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: A complete RSTS/E V10.0 documentation set, with entirely new scans by me, in both .tgz and .zip formats, is available from:

It is organized into volumes, just like my original RSTS/E doc set it was digitized from. There's lots of info in the 0-FAQ.txt file included in the archives, but the major points are:
  • All 7646 pages of RSTS/E V10.0 documentation (in 13 binders) plus an additional 255 pages of related material (in a 14th binder) now only take up 150MB of disk space for 38 PDF files, in full color where needed.
  • Each individual manual has had a full set of page thumbnails and useful bookmarks added.
  • This documentation is licensed under the Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND license and certain operations are disallowed by password protection. A regular user will not run into any issues because of those limitations. They're intended to keep the PDF files from being mangled or to remove the attribution that I did the work of digitizing them (including proofreading, re-doing scans as needed, shrinking the filesizes without loss of resolution, etc.). And yes, I know that PDF password protection can be removed with certain tools. But doing that and posting the results would show actual malice, as opposed to well-intentioned but non-useful attempts at changing the documentation to make it "better".
  • Since I never released these with a date in the filenames, downloading these will always get you the latest version if I update them.
  • I have a V10.1 manual set somewhere. When I started this digitization project, I thought this was a V10.1 set. If I find my V10.1 set, I will make it available as well. There are only minor documentation changes from V10.0 to V10.1, and none at all from V10.1 to V10.1A (the Mentec release).
  • This will eventually be an installable option for the PiDP-11 once I finish the new installation script.

Thank you for making these available Terri.

I fetched the .tgz version - and I discovered the retrieved file is a gzipped gzipped tar file (i.e. it's been gzipped twice).
Everything extracted fine.  Saved me from re-downloading the .zip version.

It's Ubuntu WSL2 on Windows on an old laptop.  My 35-or-so years of Linux finger memory using GNU tar has me specifying a z for compressed files to tar (and leaving off the '-') because it usually works for me!

tony@tweety:~$ uname -a

If the file is ok.. it must be a symptom of my using Firefox under Windows to download the .tgz file, then using the WSL2 command line to extract things.  Usually I'm at my desk on my mac.. but it's cooler here in the living room lounging on the sofa catching up with messages.

A number of people have reported an issue where both this documentation kit and the (not yet in general release bootable generic RSTS/E V10.1 kit) .tgz versions appeared to be "double compressed".

This was a result of my web server and various user clients (browsers, curl, wget and so on) disagreeing about whether my web server should compress data to optimize bandwidth. Obviously, my web server should never offer to provide a compressed version of already-compressed data. This has been fixed. If you were unable to use the .tgz version you had downloaded, re-download it and everything should work. The .zip version was not affected.

Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience.

[For Apache web server nerds - I removed "LoadModule deflate_module" from my httpd, conf]

I would like to thank Terri for the effort involved in this task!

These new docs are fully indexed PDF files, and with the reduced size are much easier to navigate and faster loading.

I am already enjoying the benefits of Terri's undertaking!

The scanning process is of some interest to me (who knows why) and the
provided info on how this whole thing got done provide info on the Xerox
scanner.

Here is a little peek into how fast the thing is, although more would be
nice to see.

It is indeed a very nice scanner. It has some foibles related to the way it feeds, and
when scanning manuals that haven't been opened in 30+ years it can double- or
multi-feed (it reduced a whole chapter to just 2 pages!). I got more practice with it
as time went on.

The black holes are part of the multi-feed detection (DEC used 5-hole punching).
It uses the black area outside the document for determining document size and
possible skew. However, DEC used some divider "tabs" which were just pages
with a 1/2" black border, and the scanner decided to make those under-sized.

Those were among the things (like the actual divider tabs, manual covers, and
fold-out pages) that I re-scanned on other equipment.

Speaking of fast equipment, in the 1980's I worked at a place that had a Kodak
Ektaprint 250. That was a photocopier that was faster than a lot of printing pres-
ses (250 sheets a minute, double-sided and optionally bound). It was about the
length of a living room!
